As I stumbled down the road. I saw a light coming down the road. I stumbled into a bush. A jeep drove by. I thought I was safe until it blew up. I saw movement so I walked towards it. Then more explosions started happening. Then I realized that the Germans were shelling me. I stumbled back to the bush. I laid down and went to sleep. I was awoken by a blinding light. I reached for my gun but it was not there. Then the light moved away.
Two American medics were standing there. I reached out and put Simmons and Ballences dog tags into the medics hand. Then they put on a stretcher. I was finally back.
3 WEEKS LATER
Grinder was back in the states. Ballence and Simmons were dead. Ack Ack was on a ship heading back for the states. Me and my new unit were heading towards a Germans position. On the way we passed destroyed vehicles. The CO said this was from a shelling that happened before we left.
It felt good to be back in the states. Then I thought about all the boys who didn't make it back. I was the lucky one.
