I saw the source of the voices. Three German soldiers heading towards the creek I grabbed my stuff and scrambled to a bush. I knew there were probably more so I crawled to a bush near the road. It looked like a whole battalion of German infantry had set up camp here. I knew I had to get out of here. I waited until the trio of Germans left I walked away.
I started walking near the road. I followed the craters and bodies that marked battles. I found burned out tanks and jeeps. Then the roads started getting bigger. Puzzled I kept walking. Finally I reached a village. I read the name of it. It was the village we had lost one week ago. A civilian walked up to me. I asked him were the Americans were. He said in broken English that they had fallen back. He said they were three kilometers down the road.
