Jack's POV
"Ok Jack." My head snaps up and to the side to see Lex starring at me. "Yeah?" I question.
"You ready for group loss therapy?" She asked while doing jazz hands.
"Ok guys gotta go! Jack if you need me I'll be in our room I have free time!" I nodded as she walked off and looked back at Lex."I guess," I said rolling my eyes. She giggled and we walked down the long white corridor. We came to this huge white door with a paper sign that said 'GROUP LOSS' in purple and the 'O's had smiley faces in them. "Give me a break," I muttered under my breath. "Oh god you're a riot," I heard Lex laugh.
I put my hand on the door to push it and Lex immediately pushed me to the side. "Wait Jack..I have to warn you." I looked into her light brown eyes trying to figure out this expression.
"I know you're not really the 'open' type but people WILL ask you," She said and widened her eyes on 'will'
"W-will ask me about what?" I stuttered confused and taken back by her broadness."They'll ask you why you're here but mainly about that," she said pointing to my bandaged wrist.
I looked down and grabbed my arm, the thought of it made my head spin. "I'm not saying people in here will but some people are nosy or just don't know better ok?" She said putting a hand on my shoulder to reassure me. I nodded."What sho-" I was cut off by a nurse, "No PDA and get to Act 1 or I'm calling your consolers!" He boomed which made me jump. Well he really didn't boom but it caught me off guard.
"Oh put a sock in it Cuey!" She said while pulling me into group loss "Come on Jack."We sat in the well known circle of a therapy room. I was very anxious as we were late because there were not two empty seats next to another. I had to sit alone next to two complete strangers. All I could do was look around the room. Tears threatened to prick my eyes as I began to have a sensory over load of all the noises and sights. I unknowingly play with the fabric of my ace bandage as the group quiets to a lady walk in.
"Alright group sorry I'm late, for those of you who don't know I'm Dr Suzzie." She continued looking around the room. "Ah it seems we have a new friend joining us today!" She exclaimed. "So honey tell us about yourself."
I gulped and looked around the room stuttering.
"Uh I umm I..I" I finally locked eyes with Lex who tried mouthing me encouragement and smiled. "Uh I'm Ja-Jack." My name fell out of my mouth at 100 miles per hour. I wonder if anyone could of comprehended it."Well Jack it's nice to have you aboard." I gave her a fake smile and continued to look around as my leg bounced in fright.
"Would you like to share why you're in group loss?" My eyes darted back to hers and I bet the fear was plastered on my face. If my eyes could open any wider I wouldn't have eyelids.
"I see, well would anyone like to go first as an icebreaker and demonstrate?" She asked among the group.
A small boy with ashy blonde hair and freckles raised his hand. "Good Kevin!" She said encouragingly. He looked down and fumbled with his thumbs in his lap.
"My name is Kevin or Kev, as some of you know," he chuckled but it was more of a sad chuckle. "I'm 19 and when I was 16, my mum and Dad were heading home from the shops when a drunk driver hit them. They-" he took a minute to breathe. "Neither of them made it..My little sister and I had to go live with our shitty uncle." Snaps echoed around the room.
"Good job holding your composure like that Kevin I'm really proud." She smiled. He looked up and tears streamed from his blue eyes."Anyone else?" A girl with red hair rose her hand.
"Uhh my name is carrie...I'm 28 and a few years ago I lost my brother.. he went overseas for a while and came back on military leave. While he was back I asked him to pick up some flowers at the store for our mum... to surprise her." She didn't look down she looked straight ahead but her eyes glossed over as she blinked away a few tears. "While he was at the store a man came in attempting to rob the store. My brother being the good guy he is... he tried to be the hero but was shot... The paramedics pronounced him de-" she broke down crying as her head fell in her hands. The two sitting next to her patted her back and calmed her down. "Its ok Carrie let it out," Dr Suzzie said. She walked to an endtable and grabbed the tissues handing them to the girl sitting next to Carrie. "Group loss is about connecting through story's with your peers and learning to cope with said loss and always know its ok to cry." She smiled looking around."Jack would you like to give it a go?"
I looked down at my legs as my body ruptured in quakes from my leg vigorously bouncing. i gripped the edges of my seat and tried to get out my story but i could barely think.
"Uhh I- When I was Uh When I was 8... I-I think I- Forgot how old I was s-sorry-" I mumbled. "No need to be sorry dear just take your time." She coached.
I took a deep breath in and let it out slowly keeping my eyes closed. "When I was about 8 my best friend killed himself, leaving me a note. I found out about it at school and I was questioned by police the whole day as they were trying to figure out his motive" as soon as that left my mouth so did tears. I squeezed my eyes closed and began to bounce again as the room snaps. "Very good Jack you're very skilled for a first timer trying to regain your breathing like that." I looked up at her and nodded. I began to look around and try to blink a way the tears that tried to fall.-Proceed to Act 2-
The intercom roared as I flew toward Lex. I don't think I've ever done anything that fast in my life. She took me out into the hallway noticing my discomfort in the room. "Hey hey big job don't sweat it. Breathe breathe. You did really good for your first time." I shook my head 'no', not being able to breathe. She kneeled down and looked up into my face. "Hey trust me I know bad. My first try I cried so hard a snot bubble came out of my nose. I tried to run for the bathroom and tripped over my chair. You did well." she gave me an emphatic smile and rubbed my back.
Once I was able to breathe I thanked her.
"Now where are you going? I'll show you where it is," She asked."Dr Hoi.."
"Oh," She said coldly.
