The next chapters will jump back and forth in time a little. I'll try include dates whenever it's possible.
This time, the title character doesn't have a POV. Don't be confused.
"Reaper is a prick."
Marian Halcombe turned her report on her appointment with operative Sun's Newblood contact into a rant. Farley wanted to pay her more attention, yet her mind drifted away to Cal and Kilorn on their mission. She was unsure if this combination worked, if they were to seperate in quarrel before they got anything done. She pondered if she had better gone with them, to either keep them in line or to watch the fun, but in the end, she preferred to stay away from the explosions that were going to ensue in their wake.
Halcombe's prattle was fun, too, in a way. Even more so as she didn't seem to get Farley's sarcasm.
"I had to pull every little thing out of him. And if I insisted too much, he almost laughed at me!" Halcombe exclaimed.
What a pleasant guy.
Farley touched the bridge of her nose, not looking forward to meet Reaper herself. "Did he tell you his real name?" she asked Halcombe.
"No," the Guard replied. "But he told me the other Newblood hidden in court was his mother and she doesn't want to do anything with us."
"What?"
"He said," Halcombe added, ignoring Farley's sudden agitation, "that his mother would not entangle herself in any 'cause' ever again."
"Again," Farley repeated, then she shook her head to chase off the unease. "And his ability?"
Halcombe sighed. "That's where the real bragging started. He claims that he's a 'thief', and he said 'make of that what you want, I will explain myself only to those higher up. You know, we rebels have to be precautious.' " She didn't try to imitate Reaper's voice, but she transported his arrogance nonetheless. She shrugged. "He's only about twenty, I think," she said as she continued with a description of his appearance: 1,7 m in height, reddish-brown hair and olive skin, almond eyes.
"And he was dressed in this tailored suit, captain. One might think he's spent too much time among the Silvers."
"That's why we want him with us, Halcombe. Do you suspect his commitment isn't serious?"
Halcombe sighed again. "He's an actor, he never shows his true thoughts. But I think he doesn't know what to make of us. He's self-protective. Yet he claims he would do anything that Sun told him to do. He trusts her. Ah, and he says he expects us to treat Sun's other contact decently."
"I see." Farley thanked Halcombe for her report and started to ponder about Sun and Reaper. Those two likely played their own game with the Scarlet Guard. Yet the Colonel thought very highly of Sun, which still stunned Farley. She imagined the Colonel was proud to have procured his own pet Silver, but one much more effective, reliable and obedient than the Calore princes that Farley had brought along as recruits.
Let's see where Sun's schemes lead us.
She waited in the infirmary for the return of Cal and Kilorn - and their captive, if all went well. Farley had cut her work as a medic for a while, first after Sara had scolded her when she'd chosen to spent her nights among the injured instead of alone.
You shouldn't work at night, Sara had signed to her with great insistence and Farley had known she had to oblige. And here in Irabelle, her days were filled with other tasks. But sharing a room with Gisa helped with her loneliness as well, to be honest.
