Chapter 8: Pleading and Secrets

August 31st

"Riley will you please tell me why you won't say yes to Lucas?" Maya said as they reached Riley's locker. 

"No, I have a reason behind this," Riley said.

"Why, won't you tell any of us," Maya said," You have kept quiet with all of us. Riles, it is killing all of us."

"Maya, do you trust me?" Riley said.

"More than anyone in the world," Maya said.

"That's not going to stop here," Riley said. 

"Riles, I don't want to worry about this," Maya said.

"Well you are going to have to put up with the feeling," Riley said looking at Maya," I am not telling you the reason behind it and that is that."

They go and sit down in their seats. 

"Have you found anything out yet?" Lucas asked.

"No, she is quiet bout this one," Maya said," I don't know why."

"The XYZ affair," Mr. Matthews said," During John Adam's presidency he secretly sent someone to negotiate with the French. He didn't tell the citizens of the new nation and that made the citizens angry since they didn't have a say in it."

"This situation sounds familiar doesn't it Riles," Maya said.

"But what resulted of the XYZ affair was the undeclared Quasi War," Mr. Matthews explained," What can we learn from this?"

"When you keep secrets from people that can make a situation worse than it already is it can anger people," Lucas said.

"Good job, Mr. Friar," Mr. Matthews said," The people that rely and trust you isn't people that should have secrets kept from. Tell your friends stuff."

"What if your afraid of how they'll react?" Riley asked.

"This brings up an interesting question. Being afraid is how you should be. Especially when the secret is important to you," Mr. Matthews said.

"Riley, why won't you tell us?" Maya asked. The gang was at Topanga's doing their homework. 

"Why do you keep bugging me about this?" Riley said looking at Maya. 

"Because it is killing me. You have never kept a secret this big from me," May said.

"Maya, you haven't stopped talking about it since Friday," Farkle said.

"I know. She has never kept a secret like this from me," Maya said.

"Maybe she doesn't want to tell you," Smackle said," It is obvious that she is nervous and she doesn't want to ruin your friendship if you take it the wrong way."

"How do you know that?" Maya asked.

"Remember when you found that locket and you didn't want to tell her where you found it," Farkle said," This is kinda like that only the roles are switched around."

"That locket had a meaning behind why I liked it," Maya said.

"And Lucas has a meaning to Riley. She doesn't want to get into a huge relationship and ruin you and Lucas' friendship," Farkle said.

"Riles, is this true?" Maya asked. Riley had her head down.

"Riles," Maya said.

"Maya, you and Lucas are my best friends and I guessed I want you two to be happy and civil with each other," Riley said," But I don't know how to be sure that it will happen." 

"What do you mean, Riles," Maya said, "The break up was mutual. We want you two to be together."

"I know what I mean, Maya," Riley said, "I just can't tell you yet."

"Why?" Maya said,"We never kept secrets like this or this long."

"I gotta go," Riley said," See you guys tomorrow."

"What was that?" Lucas said.

"That isn't Riley at all," Maya said," I don't know why she would act like this."

"Yeah," Farkle said.

Riley was sitting in the bay window writing in a journal when Farkle crawled through her window.

"We need to talk," Farkle said.

"About what?" Riley said looking at Farkle.

"That whole dilemma at Topanga's," Farkle said,"Are you okay?"

"I don't want their friendship to be damaged because I am dating Lucas and Maya is my best friend," Riley said,"They both mean so much to me and I want to know that they are going to get along." 

"Is that why you seem really sad and stressed right now?" Farkle said. 

"No, I guess right now I want to keep some things to myself," Riley said, "I do love Maya but there are some things that I need to have to myself."

"I don't think Maya sees it like that," Farkle said.

"What do you mean?" Riley said.

"You and Maya have always told each other everything and when you didn't tell her about this she doesn't know how to react. She is taken back why you would do this," Farkle said. 

"I didn't think that I would actually hurt her," Riley said. 

"I don't think you meant to either. You have always cared about her since she came into your bedroom window all those years ago," Farkle said. 

"I have," Riley agreed. 

"She is confused, too," Farkle said,"but I don't know how to help you with this." 

"It is okay, Farkle," Riley said.

"I know you will figure this out. I believe in you. I always have," Farkle said,"I probably should go now. See you at school tomorrow Riley."

"See ya, Farkle," Riley said.
