Chapter 1: Intro

Meghan P.O.V.
"We beat 'em!" Jack yells.
Everyone cheers. I can't believe we won!

All of the couples are making out and then I'm just standing there. I feel bad for myself. But then again, ain't it a fine life?

I wake up.

I frown at that flashback. Had no boyfriend, and have no boyfriend. Probably because every newsie knows me, and it will be weird dating me. Anytime I do something wrong, he would know. It happens that way.

"Come on! Wakey wakey! Get up! They sleep their lives away these kids! Sell the papers!" Everyone moans and groans. "Heya kid, WAKE UP!" Kloppman laughs and walks around shaking the others. I roll my eyes and get up. I run to the bathroom stall first. I'm glad I did. It gets very nasty after everyone goes.

Race, my best friend walks up behind me as I'm brushing my teeth. "Mornin' sunshine."

"Shut ya trap Race!" I laugh.

"Heya Meg!" Jack slaps my back as he walks by. I hate how I am treated like every other guy newsie. Although they don't think I'm weak. But still, you gotta let a girl be a girl, ya know?
Except Race. Racetrack is like that. He like to treat people the way they want to be treated. Not to the level of being bossed around though.
"Heya Jacky-boy!"

"Heya Meg, wanna head ta the races wit me?"
"Yes!"

I run to get dressed. After that I brush my hair and braid it, putting it in my newsie cap.

I slide down the banister and hug Blink from behind. "I'm goin wit Race ta Sheepshead."

"Okay, be careful and stay away from Spot Conlon. Youse don't wanna fall fo' 'im."

"Ise know Ise know. Plus, Ise like someone else."

"What now?!?!"

I kiss him on the cheek and leave.
"It's okay! Ise just jokin!"

I can see him calm down and smile.
Little does he know I'm not joking.

Race comes out after me and we race to the bridge.

We laugh and smile the whole way.
