“Ellen!” My mom said in a disproving manner. “I thought you said you didn’t have a date for the dance!”
Gobsmacked, I turned to her and shook my head.
“You must be Ellen’s date,” my mom said as she leant towards the passenger side of the car, holding out her hand.
“No, mom–”
“Hello, Mrs. Moon.” The guy said, shaking her hand. “You’ll have to excuse my cold hands, I walked here.”
My mom’s cheeks went red as she must have finally looked up at his face.
I pushed the stranger out of the way and bent down so half of my body was in the car. “Go away, mom!” I hissed. “You’re embarrassing me!”
Someone wolf whistled and I lifted my head to see who it was but banged it on top of the roof. “Ow…” I muttered before I got out of the car again.
I looked across the road and saw Vicky with Dustin. “Hey sexy!” she shouted. I waved to her and then shut the door, indicating that my mom should leave.
“Thanks,” I said and hugged her as she crossed the road.
Vicky then looked at the boy standing next to me, although he could be a man – he was very handsome – who knows? “Ellen, you didn’t tell me you were bringing a date!?” She enquired, lifting an eyebrow.
I rolled my eyes. “He’s no–”
“Hi,” the man said with an outstretched hand. “It’s nice to meet you, Vicky.”
“You know my name?”
“Of course, Ellen told me.
I opened my mouth to protest. I was getting worried. This guy knew A LOT about me and I didn’t even know his name. Who was he?
“Well I’m flattered.” Vicky replied, grabbing her boyfriend’s hand. “We’ll see you in there, Ellen.”
“Yeah, bye…” I mumbled, wishing, now, that my mom had stayed. I so wanted to go home – again.
The man/boy-boy/man who ever he was turned to me after Vicky left. “I think an introduction is in order.” He said, smirking.
“I think an explanation is, more like.”
“Hi, my name’s Oakley.” I noticed for the first time that he had a British accent. “I’m seventeen.”
“I’m Ellen,” I replied. “I’m seventeen, too, but you already know that, right?” The man chuckled as I continued. “I haven’t seen you around.”
“I’m home schooled.”
“That explains it then…”
“Yeap. Would you like to go into the dance, Ellen?” He asked.
I didn’t know why, but when he smiled at me then, it was amazing. It made my heart stop beating for a bit. Weird, right?
“Um… yeah…”
“If you’d let me, I’d like to take your hand.”
“In marriage?” I asked. God, this man was full of bombs he wanted to drop.
“No,” he chuckled. “Not yet, anyway.”
“Oh, okay,” I responded. “That’s cool.” In my head I was saying, WHAT? GET MARRIED? NOT YET? But then, I wasn’t objecting. Who wouldn’t want to marry this creepy, god like British man? “I mean take my arm, so I can lead you into the dance.”
“Oh right, are you meant to be here with someone else? Is that your plan? But you’re escorting me in here because you don’t want me to be humiliated? Right?”
Oakley chuckled. His voice sounded like velvet and I almost sighed. Please, I scoffed, I was acting like a love-sick puppy.
“No. I came here because I didn’t want a beautiful girl like you to be alone tonight. I’m here for you, Ellen.”
“Oh right…” I mumbled as my face went bright read. “Okay.”
“Come on, let’s go into the dance.”
“Everyone’s staring at us…” I whispered as the door closed behind us.
“Then let’s give them something to stare at.”
“Wh—” I was cut off when Oakley firmly pressed his lips to mine. I was too shocked to react and then he pulled away.
“Come on.” He smiled. “Let’s get a drink.”
I nodded my head and allowed him to drag me to the drink stand. I noticed his hands were cold – now I know he said he walked here but shouldn’t he have warmed up by now.
“Can I steal her for a moment?” Vicky asked. I looked up from the floor and noticed she’d walked over to us. I stopped walking, we were right near the drink table.
“Sure…”
“Thanks.”
Vicky waited until he was out of sight before she squeeled. “You kept his a secret! Wow, he’s gorgeous.”
“Don’t let your boyfriend hear that.”
“Are you dating him?”
“No I just met–” I cut myself off. It would be weird if I said the guy I just met took me to the dance and kissed me in the space of fifteen minutes. “I just mentioned it the other night. You guy must have forgot.”
Vicky creased her eyebrows. “Whatever,” she finally said before walking off. I carried on walked towards Oakley and saw a few people still staring at me.
“What?” I asked, directing all of them.
I sighed and looked up, seeing Oakley put something back into his pocket.
“Here. Drink this.”
I smiled and took the punch from his – drinking all of it. If only it was vodka, I thought as I shook my head.
“Would you care to dance?” He asked.
I swallowed nervously and put my drink down. Something wasn’t right… a really REALLY hot guy was asking me to dance, was taking me to the dance.
“Sure.” I said as he grabbed my hand, making his way over to the dance floor with me.
A slow song started playing and Oakley took my waist, guiding me over to the dance floor.
“I have something to tell you, Ellen.”
“What?” I asked, again feeling his hands were cold. Oh well, maybe they’d warm up against mine throughout the dance.
“I’m a vampire.”
“Oh, you’re a vegetarian. That’s cool. For a minute there I thought you said you were a–”
“Vampire?”
I sighed in relief. “Yeah.”
“That is what I said. I am a vampire.”
