“Was I going to be consulted about this before you made your mind up?!” A young lad with brown hair, and dark brown eyes shouted to Drake, who stood firmly by November’s side.
“I’m talking to you about it now, aren’t I?”
“That’s not the point.”
Drake sighed. “You’re right, that’s not the point.”
“H-huh?” The boy asked. He was surprised because he didn’t think Drake would stand down that quickly.
“The point is,” Drake continued, “November doesn’t have anywhere to go. And we live in a secluded area. We can help her.”
“You want to let a stranger into our house, a girl into our home?”
“Yes. Isn’t that obvious? I wouldn’t have told her she could stay otherwise.”
“It just would have been nice to let me know beforehand.”
Drake sighed again, running a hand through his hair. “I’m sorry, Giles. But my decision is final.”
November watched Giles as Drake’s mouth turned upwards; into a smile. “Come on, Giles. Having someone new around the house would be great. It’ll remind us more of the world around us.”
Giles looked at Drake tentatively, and then rolled his eyes, finally giving in after his best-friend sent him a smile that could be on covers of magazines. “Fine, just make sure she doesn’t get in my way.”
“I’ll try my hardest.” November muttered.
Giles’s head snapped and turned to look at her, almost forgetting she was there.
“Who are you?” He asked, almost turning his nose up at the girl.
“I’m November Macey. I’m fifteen and I used to live in the centre of London.”
“Okay.” The boy replied, rolling his eyes. “I’m going to watch the game. Are you coming, Drake?”
Drake glanced at November, who was nervously playing with her hands. “Um… no. I don’t think so. Not this time, Giles, sorry mate.”
“Well what’re you going to do?” There was a hint of jealousy and distaste in Giles voice.
“I’m going to get November settled in.”
The girl had that side of her face covered and Drake wanted to get her alone to ask her about what he’d seen earlier.
“Whatever.” Giles finally replied.
Drake offered to let November out of the house first. They’d been upstairs, to the spare room, and November was able to un-pack all of her things in under five minutes.
“Thanks.” She replied, smiling to the boy who was so helpful.
They walked silently, to nowhere in particular and November listened intensely at the sound their footfalls were making against the leaves scattered all around the ground.
“It’s so peaceful here.”
“Yeah.” Drake replied. “It really is. Although, at night, sometimes, it gets noisy.”
“Really? You can’t hear the traffic from here.”
“No. It’s the animals.”
“Oh,” November replied. “That seems to make sense.”
“Are you still in school?”
“No. I’ve been home-schooled ever since my mom died. I guess my dad just wanted me close.”
