The next few months whizzed by, the Mullette wedding planning was in full swing. The month of June was a blur of Monster Energy and so much coffee, you could barely keep your leg from sporadically tapping.
John was only able to persuade Alex to sleep for a total of 4 hours, at most, and the four's apartment was a complete mess of floral samples and law textbooks.
"I'm so proud of you," John squealed, straightening Alexander's tie. "Top of the class, started as a sophomore and so handsome."
"You flatter me, John," Alexander blushed but swelled with pride. He leaned into his boyfriend's touch and let John's warm fingers comb through his hair. "Kill me if I'm being cheesy, but I couldn't have done it without you..."
"I hope you aren't going to bring that level of cheesiness to your valedictorian speech, cuz only grandmas cry at that bullshit," John replied. John joked, but he felt more and more love towards Alexander everytime he said something like that. It was so good, after pining for so long, to feel loved by him. He had yearned to hear the words 'i love you' ever since the disheveled boy stumbled into their dorm saying he was Alexander Hamilton and there was a million thing he hadn't done.
He had graduated college and the world was his oyster. John couldn't wait to see what the man would do next. Selfishly, though, he hoped he would be included in his plan for the future. He had just got Alexander two months ago, losing him again is unthinkable.
"Hey," Alexander whispered, pressing a soft kiss to John's neck. John closed his eyes to savor the intimate touch. "I know what you're thinking. This isn't the end of us, I'm always gonna be by your side. And hopefully, you'll do the same. We're free now, it's you and me against the world." Alexander reached for John's hand and linked their pinkies together.
John looked down at their linked pinkies and grinned. "What is this, an 80's romance movie?"
"You and me, kid, it's you and me," Alexander muttered. John laughed and kissed the top of Alexander's head.
"Give 'em hell, Lexi."
Madison stared at Thomas throughout all of Hamilton's valedictorian speech. James knew how much Thomas wanted that to be him. James knew of Thomas' dreams to be on that podium. It pinched at his heart to look at Thomas' pained expression and not be able to intertwine their fingers and whisper "stop glaring, you'll laser hole into Hamilton's forehead."
Leaning back in his seat, James sighed. He was the one who broke up with Thomas, cut the poison out of your life. But James couldn't help wonder, was Thomas the poison? Maybe their breakup could set him straight. James could only hope, though.
"Thank you," Hamilton said and walked off the stage. James blinked a few times, hearing the loud cheers erupt through the crowd. His speech is over? He really had been watching Thomas for that long? It killed James, to be so hung up on Thomas. Once James caught sight of the boy, it took nearly forever to peel his gaze away. He supposed it was called being blindly in love, unable to stop loving Thomas with all his heart, James really was head over heels.
Thomas began to turn and the two locked eyes. Thomas' eyes widened, his lips tight. James gazed back, his expression unreadable. Thomas blinked and then looked at Burr, who was saying something to him. Thomas got up and walked off with Aaron, not looking back at James. Yet, James found his eyes still following Thomas. They followed him until he was out of the doors and out of sight. Then, James got up and walked the opposite direction.
"So, hey, you wanna go apartment hunting tomorrow?" John asked. The newly-graduated boys were lying on Alex's bed. Alexander was typing out a resume while John was cuddled at his side, taking a "Can Your Taste in Men Guess What Turtle You Are" Buzzfeed quiz.
