I awoke to the daylight streaking in through the leaves of the tree I was sprawled underneath. I rubbed the sleep from my eyes, still feeling groggy and slightly sleep deprived. My stomach let out a low rumble, and I remembered how hungry I was. Not knowing where the heck I was gonna find a good meal, I wandered around aimlessly. I thought about Pocahontas, and how she had to live in the woods and battle the elements of the great outdoors every day.
I nearly forgot about the previous days events, and my heart wrenched just thinking about it.
After about 20 minutes of meandering in the woods and day dreaming about corny children's tales, I came upon a semi-clear creek. I jumped for joy and took a long gulp.
That night, I spotted a deer thoroughly chewing on a wad of grass. I conveniently remembered the dagger in the pocket of my hoodie. To my surprise, my hoodie pocket was still in tact after have a knife in there for almost 24 hours. After stalking it for God knows how long, I pounced at it, and my dinner lay dead at my feet. Wow, I thought. You'd think it would be harder to kill a deer.
I frowned at how handy I was becoming with a knife. It definitely wasn't a skill to be proud of.
I roasted the veal over a makeshift campfire I had constructed out of twigs and dry leaves. This was the one moment I was happy I enrolled in Girl Scouts.
And that was the beginning of the rest of my life.
