“Come on let me see who you are." He waited patiently for me to show myself. I cautiously stepped out from my hiding spot. He sucked his teeth and shook his head.
“What happened to you?"
“What happened to you?" I retorted sharply.
“Follow me, I'll get you cleaned up and something to eat." he said reaching out to me. I pulled away.
“I can handle myself. I'm a big girl." I joked; but I wasn't laughing.
“Besides, I don't even know you. What makes you think I'm just gonna run away with you?" Suddenly I started to feel dizzy and my knees gave out. I collapsed onto the ground, my hand held to my pounding head. He helped me up and I slung my arm around his shoulder. We hobbled over to his RV, which wasn't too far from where we were. My eyes practically popped out of my head. That was the closest thing to a house I've seen in ages. We hobbled up the steps and I reluctantly settled down into a chair.
“I still don't know your name." I huffed wearily, crossing my arms.
“Oh right. I'm Reuben, but my friends call me Ben." he said, dismissing the matter with a wave of his hand. I still wasn't satisfied.
“Well who are you, Reuben?" I challenged.
“What kind of question is that?" He said, not answering my question. Suddenly I felt a twang of exhaustion, and my eyelids got too heavy to keep open. Reuben shoved a cool glass of water in my hand, and I took a long gulp, and I almost instantly felt better. He walked off, and I heard the bathroom door slam shut, and my eyes shifted to the fridge. I tiptoed my way over to the kitchen-ette and started rummaging through the contents of the fridge and cupboards. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a needle and some thread. I chuckled to myself; Reuben didn't strike me as the sewing type. I found some tortilla chips and took a handful. I happily munched the chips until Reuben walked back into the room. I looked up at him innocently, wiping crumbs from my mouth. He just rolled his eyes and walked over to the counter.
“Hey, what's your name, anyway?"
“Why do you wanna know?" I questioned smugly.
“The same reason you wanted to know my name." He replied, unaware of my attitude.
“I'm... I'm Anova." I said hesitantly. Even I knew the dangers of telling a complete and total stranger who you are, but then again, I had followed him to his RV, so I figured I would be okay.
“And exactly what are you doing wandering around the country-side?" he questioned, clearly puzzled.
“That's none of your business." I whispered, ashamed of my reasons.
Let's just say that it's still a sore subject to talk about.
He studied the floor, and I bit my lip.
“Sooo... I see you've already helped yourself to a snack." He said, changing the subject. My checks flushed bright red, and I smiled sheepishly. He chuckled, shaking his head.
“That's okay." He said, unfazed. “I was gonna offer you something to eat anyway." He ran a hand through his thick, dark brown hair.
“The bathroom is right over there if you wanna take a shower." He suggested, motioning towards the bathroom where he had disappeared off to earlier.
“Okay, thanks." I shuffled off the bathroom. I locked the door and started stripping my worn out clothes.
Reuben seemed like a nice enough guy, but I knew I couldn't stay...not for long...
