Two Months Later…

I turned the corner, keeping my head down. A police car was parked on the side of the street, and I could see the police looking at me. I pulled my hood up over my head and quickened my pace. I saw the cop point in my direction and turn to talk to his colleague. Butterflies swarmed in my stomach as I made a beeline for my car. It was a used car that I bargained from a guy for all the money I had left. The cops were hot on my trail. I swung the car door open and ducked in. I fumbled with the keys and jammed it into the ignition. No matter how much I turned the keys, the car wouldn't start. Shoot. To my relief, the car rumbled to life. I floored the gas and I zoomed off.

I came to a red light, but I charged right through. I spotted a narrow alley and I swerved into it, just narrowly missing a truck. I bumped down the alley, my car jerking with every pot hole. The police car made a sharp turn and continued his hot pursuit. When will that gosh darn police just give it a rest already?

I made a random left turn and found myself in a one way lane. I let out a slew of curse words under my breath. I gripped the steering wheel until my knuckles turned white, maneuvered myself through the wave of cars that bombarded me from all directions. I swore I was gonna crash, but I ended up making it out of there unharmed. I breathed a sigh of relief. I had finally lost the police car. I pulled up to a curb and rested my head on the wheel. I can't live like this anymore, I thought to myself. But I knew I had no other option. I had moved from Oregon to Idaho to Montana. I knew I wasn't safe anywhere, and, even more importantly, I knew I couldn't trust anyone. I had hardened my heart, putting up great walls around it. Walls that no one can penetrate.

Little did I know that this was about to change.
