Instead of whisking Alice away to her cell after dinner he grabbed her by the hand and took her down a different path through the sanctuary towards the parking lot.
"Shh, come with me." He whispered.
"What? Where are we going?" her voice echoes off the empty marble structure around them. He put a finger to his lips.
"Shh," he repeated. "I'm taking you out tonight."
"What? Can't you get fired or something?" Alice kept her voice low this time.
"Quite possibly." Ellion led her around another corner and they passed Skulduggery's office. The door was slightly ajar, allowing them to see Skulduggery pouring over the Vivi manual as the teen herself waited patiently, talking to a green jade skull on his desk.
"But Vivi and I are supposed to be in a cell for the night. The only reason China allowed the trip out of Roarhaven for Vivi was because it was with Skulduggery. She still doesn't want to risk us running away and aiding the enemy. Especially since she found out about how strong our magic might become."
"That's why China doesn't know about it. I figured if Vivi was in the cell alone and she knew you weren't there she'd blab. So I got Skulduggery to agree on taking her out for the entire night and only bring her back to the cell at 2 in the morning which gives us plenty of time to get you back there before her." Ellion explained.
"Time to do what exactly." Alice flirted.
"Well, you told me that we couldn't be in a relationship together until you have shoved enough chocolate ice-cream down my throat that it becomes my favourite flavour. I have a full wallet, an empty stomach, and a throat that is in perfect condition, as requested. So are you going to take me out or what?" he said and she smiled radiantly.
"You really do think of everything, don't you?" she laughed. Ellion got so caught up in her stunning hazel eyes that he didn't hear the slow footsteps coming towards them, even when they were right in front of him.
"Ellion, my boy! What are you doing roaming about the Sanctuary this late? Oh, and with a lady friend too. This is the same one from the other night, isn't it? What a pretty young thing, eh?" Mr Blunder winked at him and Ellion thanked the lord that it was only the maintenance man that had taken a liking to him.
"Yeah, this is Alice. We're just, you know, taking a walk around the scenic route. Where are you off to?" Ellion quickly changed the subject.
"Oh, just cleaning up a bowel explosion in the old Sanctuary toilets. A man ate off Mexican. Must have been pretty bad food poisoning to use the toilets down there where most people don't even remember it exists." The old man laughed. "But I couldn't find my toilet brush anywhere. It's just disappeared. Ah well, there'll be one down there."
Alice gave him a polite smile. "Well, it's been nice meeting you Mr Blunder." She grinned and he bade them goodnight.
"So much for stealth," she rasped into Ellion's ear as they hurried away.
