Elsa woke up the next day feeling a hole in her heart. She couldn’t stop aching and her body felt numb. Her body felt heavy as she pushed herself gently off the bed. She could barely walk across the room, her feet stumbling over the other.
Why didn’t she tell him that she loved him too?
Her body just broke down and stopped functioning, as if not letting her say the words. She watched Jack walk away, his back getting small and smaller.
“I love you,” she said, holding her hands above her chest. Her eyes were glassy and she couldn’t stop shaking.
Suddenly a flood of tears rushed down her ashy pale cheeks. The color faded from her skin as she fell to the ground, clutching her heart. Her eyes squeezed together, feeling the tears run down her cheek. They burned against her skin, etching and carving deeply.
It hurts, she whispered.
It hurts so much. A pain welled up in her, piercing all the pieces of her heart. Her face was drenched with tears that painted her face.
She felt hollow and lonely; a deep hole puncturing her heart and the soles of her feet didn’t seem to exist anymore.
He didn’t seem to exist anymore. She thought of Jack, and how he always managed to make her smile.
She missed his bright blue eyes that would spark up a conversation, and his wispy hair that looked like stratus clouds in the winter.
Slowly, Elsa lifted herself up, taking a finger and wiping away the tears. Her eyes were dim and gray, reflective like a pearl with a thin sheet of glass wavering in front of it.
Her lips pursed out and she bit down on her lower lip, her fingers frail and skinny shook as she exited her room. She was going to visit Jack to clear up the misunderstanding. Her steps felt hollow and landed with a loud thud echoing against the floor boards. Quickly, she exited her castle. With tear marks trailing on her face and her dress flowing behind her, she dashed through the fields.
She could see it, the forest he lived in. The cottage came into view, small and stringy that seemed like it would appear in a folktale. Grass blades bit her along the ankle as she pushed through the bundles of plants. Her hand knocked on the door without hesitation.
Willis came out; his hair messed up and curled up at the ends. He was in his bathrobe that was silky and followed behind his feet. He had unshaved legs that were prickly and covered in a thick mass of hair. His stringy hair stuck out of all places as he sniffed. His eyes widened nervously at the sight of Elsa as sweat trickled down his face. Before he could ask why she was here, she piped up.
“Can I see Jack?” She asked demandingly. Willis looked away, his beady eyes nervously darted from corner to corner.
“He um,” Willis pulled up his sleeves anxiously, his lips quivering. “He left yesterday.”
“Where,” Elsa shot, almost pouncing towards Willis.
“To the mountain range up north, he said he needed a break from everything and wanted fresh air.” He paused, skeptically looking around. “What happened?”
“No, no.” Elsa repeated, shaking her head nervously. Her hair came loose and traveled down her body. She brought her hands to her head to stop it from shaking. She heard her heart break, the fragments of it spreading apart, her ears blocked out everything and her vision got blurry. She bent down to her knees, feeling nauseous and empty. “This can’t happen.”
“Wait, wha-” Willis started to ask. Elsa ran away, her dress tattering and tripping beneath her. Her hands were placed furiously at her sides and her feet seemed to float above the ground.
I’m going to go find him, he can’t survive there. Elsa thought, running deeper into the woods.
I’m going to find him and tell him I love him.
She said as she faded into the darkness.
