"I've not forgotten our deal, Chloe".
No matter how many times I repeated those words back to myself, I still ended up with more questions than answers. What did he mean by that? He obviously had remembered the promise he had made me, and I couldn't help but feel flattered. But why had he brought it up? And now, after all this time? Why? Why?
After he had whispered in my ear, Danny had joined us in the living room, handing Tom his bottle of beer, and the moment between us had been shattered. There would be no chance to question him, not with my brother in the room.
I sat perched on one of the armchairs, lost deep in thought, oblivious to what the two men were talking about. It was only when I heard my name being mentioned, that I focused my attention on them again.
".... an absolute weirdo. I don't know what Chloe sees in him.", Danny was telling Tom, not bothering to lower his voice.
I looked over to Danny, intending to give him one of my famous filthy looks, but was met by Tom's unreadable gaze instead.
"So...Joey?", the frown forming across his forehead.
I blushed, and dropped my head. Joey seemed a world away from being important now Tom was here. It felt almost childish to mention his name. But there was no getting around it, I couldn't not answer him.
"He's just a friend.. well, sort of. He's taking me to the cinema tonight. That's all.", I replied, sitting up straight. "He should be here soon, so I best go finish getting ready. If you'll excuse me...", and I walked out before another word could be said.
As I finished getting ready, my mind was in a whirl, my heart was beating at a rate that wasn't normal, and to make matters worse, I ripped two pairs of tights in the course of getting dressed.
Ten minutes later, I stood in front of the mirror, 75% happy with my appearance. So maybe I was a little too overdressed for the cinema. Lacy yellow skater dress, with a tan leather jacket and matching ankle boots for a casual evening out? Screw it, I looked good, I felt good, and I didn't usually feel that way about myself.
Just as I stepped out of my bedroom, the doorbell rang, and I rushed to the door before Danny, anxious to avoid a scene.
"Hey....wow! Look at you, babe!", Joey greeted me, giving me a hug just as Danny and Tom decided to come see who was at the door.
"Oh, it's you.", Danny stated, not even trying to hide his sarcastic tone.
"Hello Danny. Good to see you too, man.", Joey replied, trying to be polite. Seeing that we had company he put out his hand, about to shake Tom's hand, when he recognized who it was.
"Hi, I'm Joey... Oh My Goodness! You're...you're...", words failing him. Joey was a huge MARVEL fan, one of the few things we actually had in common. I had never told him of our acquaintance with Tom, so no wonder he stood there, in total shock. Well, it wasn't everyday you met Loki in the flesh!
"Hello, I'm Tom, Tom Hiddleston. Although I'm guessing you already knew that.", he laughed, as charming as always, but I could tell his "ehehe" didn't sound quite genuine enough.
"This is so weird! I was actually taking Chloe to see a rerun of Thor The Dark World tonight!", the admiration evident in Joey's voice.
"Ok, I hate to break this party up, but we're going to be late if we don't leave soon. And I know how much you hate being late for the cinema, Joey", I reminded him, anxious to be gone. This was just turning out to be too weird.
"You're right, babe. I'll go bring the car round, meet me out front in five minutes?"
"Yeah, sure."
"It was amazing to meet you Tom!", he shouted, as he sprinted down the apartment's corridor.
"Ok, I'm going to go get my stuff. And Danny, I'd like my phone back now, please."
He sighed loudly as he handed it over. "Your loss, kiddo. That's all I'm saying!"
I didn't even want to hear it, I just took my phone and marched to my room. I heard footsteps following me, and I attempted to shut my door, but Tom's foot stood in the way.
"Is everything Ok, Chloe?", his velvety voice almost capable of soothing all my anger away.
"Yeah, I'm fine. I'm sorry, Tom. It's just, sometimes Danny can be a pain in the neck. I'll go out with who I want, it's nothing to do with him!", I explained, grabbing my coat and bag.
"He only says those things because he cares about you and doesn't want you getting hurt. I'd be saying the same thing if you were my sister."
"But you're not my brother Tom. And I've waited long enough to have a relationship, still waiting for something that will never happen. I'm old enough now to appreciate what I've been missing out on, and I intend to find it now. I'm not sitting around waiting for the impossible to happen, I'm going out and making it happen. So if you'll excuse, I have a date to attend." And, breathe.
He seemed unsure of what to reply after that. He just looked at me, as if he was proccessing the information I had just divulged.
"Come on, I'll walk you down."
He sounded defeated, and I willingly followed him out the apartment, not bothering to say goodbye to my brother, who was nowhere to be see. Once out in the corridor, I went to make my way over to the stairs, but I was stopped by a strong grip on my arm. I turned to see Tom holding my upper arm, a steely look in his eyes.
"We're going in the lift, and we're going to talk. Properly."
