A few hours later...

Annie's POV

As I took a deep breath I opened my eyes again and released the thin string and the end of the arrow from in between my index and middle fingers, lowering the bow once I feel the vibration of the arrow leaving the drawstring.

I held my breath as I watched the arrow hurtle towards the target, a wooden board covered with stitched together burlap and two red circles painted on it, about a meter or two in front of me. It hits the target, just to the left of the bullseye.

I let out a sigh of frustration as I turned back to Chelsea who is leaning against the fence.

"Not my greatest practice," I said as I hopped onto the fence beside her, placed my bow down and adjusted the strap to my quiver that went across my right shoulder and chest.

"Maybe, but those kids were still impressed, you're good at what you do An, not perfect, but good, and that's something to be proud of," she replied nudging me in the shoulder.

"Yeah well when their parents hear what the shots I made were like, they won't say the same things," I retorted bitterly.

"Well, everyone has their off days, you just have to learn to live with them," she stated before turning her head towards the target, which still had all the arrows I had shot that day in it, "Today was one of those days for you. Trust me, tomorrow will be better."

I smirked as I stood up again, walking over to the target I pulled all the arrows out of it, placing the not damaged ones, which were only a few of them, back into my quiver and placing the rest in the discard bin.

After that, I turned back around and stared at the streets of old wooden, stone and brick buildings that had made up the city of O'khasis for hundreds of years. I sighed contently as I admired the simplicity of the buildings on this side of town. It was so much different from the bigger houses that belonged to all of the aristocratic families that surrounded our house. It was nice to get out of that area. Somedays, I dreamed what it would have been if I wasn't a Ro'meave. I dreamed that life would be simpler. You wouldn't be going to so many places in one day, you would actually get alone time and you wouldn't have everyone watching and judging your every move.

"Ready to go lil' sis?" A voice that isn't Chelsea's said, snapping me out of my trance.

I looked up to see Vylad whose elbows were resting on the fence, my bow in his left hand, smiling.

"I'm heading out An, see ya later!" I heard Chelsea yell from behind me as I turn and wave, watching her for a few moments as she runs off into the distance.

I then turned back to Vylad taking my bow from his now extended hand, "You're here early."

"Yeah well, Garroth got called on patrol last minute so he had to leave early. I decided since you usually finish training around this time I could come find you. How did it go?" He says as he jumps the fence handing me the bow.

"Not great, missed four of my shots. I guess I'm just out of it. Chelsea said not to worry about it, but I can't help it," I replied, still bitter about my unsuccessful training session.

"Was it, I don't know because a whole bunch of kids were watching you?"

"...yes, I mean, they go home and tell their parents everything, and what they say to their parents reflects onto me," I said as we start to walk into the woods.

"I know, just remember, being a Ro'meave is a tough job, and like I always say-,"

"Please not this again..." I groaned, I knew exactly what he was going to say.

"Only the strong survive."

I smirk and roll my eyes as I trail ahead of him turning back when I reach the gate as a challenge to see who could get to the clearing first.

<~>

I heard footsteps of someone running behind me as I ran into the woods, following the path straight on. Eventually, I hear someone run by me and come to a stop as I reach the opening to the clearing. Vylad, of course, had beat me to it. He smirked as I approached him.

"You're actually faster than I thought! Even if I did still beat you," He said, out of breath.

But I don't reply.

I'm studying the area of the clearing behind him.

"What?" He says as he looks at me, confusion washing over his face.

"Shh, look," I whispered, pointing to what had grabbed my attention.

Behind him, in the open clearing that had a river separating it into two halves and a bridge connecting them, stood a man with medium length straggly hair the inky color of black which was longer at the top and shorter at the bottom. He was holding a sword that was a crimson red and wearing an outlandish type of armor. It was a mix of blood red and coal black plates, the two biggest of them sitting on top of his broad shoulders, shining lustrously as the sun's rays reflected off of the top of them and it was holding down a short red cape. He looked strong, if not a little dangerous. I'd never seen him around O'khasis before, and since he was dressed in full armor that seemed unusual, was he possibly visiting from another village?

"Vylad, maybe we should leave, I-I have a bad feeling about this," I whispered to him as he turned to me.

After turning back to where the man was standing and staring at him for a couple of seconds he turned back to me and nodded. We started to sneak away and head back to the village, each step filled with caution, careful not to disturb the man, before we heard him speak from behind us, his voice deep but young at the same time,

"Where are you two going?"

We stopped dead in our tracks and looked at each other for a brief moment before turning around and walking into the area where clearing opened.

"Sorry to disturb you Sir, we were just leaving," Vylad said as he took a few steps ahead of me.

"Not as sorry as I am," he replied.

"What?" I said, confused taking a step or two forward, just enough to be slightly in front of Vylad.

"Can you tell us your name?" Vylad says, placing his arm in front of me in a protective way, looking at me before turning back to the man as if to tell me to stay put.

"My name is Gene," he said as he turns, "and I'm sorry, but I can't allow you to leave with you seeing me."

Vylad's eyes widened slightly and his pupils dilated as I take a few steps back, the man in front of us had flaming red eyes, filled with hatred and madness.

And I was pretty sure at this point that his previous statement...

was a threat.
