Chapter Thirteen

The next morning...
Annie's POV
I rolled over in the direction of my window to see the sun peeking over the trees. I sat up and yawned. I hadn't slept after I had gotten back from the walk I had taken with Katelyn. I got ready and hoped that Katelyn had already left for patrol.
I got downstairs where Katelyn was trying to bake muffins. I silently tried to sneak past her and out the door but I tripped over the chair and fell over.
Katelyn whipped around to see me rubbing my forehead while I stood up.
"Morning!" She said as she tried to stop herself from laughing.
"Morning," I mumbled back.
Her smile disappeared before she said,
"Hey, I'm sorry about asking about your brother last night, are you still mad?"
I stayed quiet as I put my bow back down by the door.
"I'll take that as a yes," she said back as she turned back to the muffin batter.
"Katelyn," I said, "I'm not mad at you, I just didn't sleep once I got back."
She turned to me and smiled before she turned back to the muffin batter in front of her. I looked over her shoulder and into the bowl.
The batter was almost completely liquefied and looked like a watery mess.
I laughed before saying,
"Did you add enough flour to the batter?"
"I added a little bit," Katelyn replied frustrated.
I smiled before walking over to her and grabbing the flour. I added a few cups of it before stirring the batter and soon enough it looked like actual batter.
"How do you know how to bake so well?" Katelyn asked me as I placed the muffin tray in the oven.
"My mom taught me. She bakes a lot," I replied as I stood up and wiped the flour that was left on my hands onto the towel laying on the table.
After we finished eating the muffins we headed out to help out around the village as much as we could. (As you can tell, we aren't the people who sit around until they're needed)
We were walking towards the village gate when a person, who sounded to be a young girl, shouted,
"Thief!"
Katelyn and I whipped around just in time to see a man grab a bottle of medicine from a young girl and run off. I ran after him while Katelyn went to go help the girl.
He ran through alleyways and around houses to try and get away from me but I was always able to keep track of him. Eventually, I caught up to him and kicked him in the leg which caused him to run into a wall.
While he was catching his breath I grabbed his arm, pinned it behind his back and grabbed the bottle of medicine. A few moments later the guards caught up to me and took the man to the prison. Katelyn approached me with the girl who I handed the bottle of medicine.
"Thank you, miss!" She said happily before she ran off in the other direction.
Katelyn and I headed back to the guest house for a little bit and ate some lunch.
"You know the girl who you got the medicine back for earlier?" Katelyn said as she cleaned her plate in the sink.
"Yeah, what about her?" I replied.
"Her name was Emily, she was apparently getting the medicine for her younger brother who is very ill," Katelyn said.
"I hope he gets better," I replied.
Then, there was a knock at the door. I went to open it and Eli, the head guard of Nahakra,  was standing there.
"Yes?" I said politely.
"I, um, wanted to thank you two for helping that young girl get her medicine back. We are all very thankful for that," he said as he ran his hand through his shaggy black hair.
I smiled.
"It was no problem," I replied softly.
He smiled, his cheeks slowly turning red.

Was he blushing? I thought to myself, wait, am I blushing?!

I looked down at the ground as I felt my cheeks turn as red as my uniform.

"Well um, I should get back to my patrol," Eli said as he stood back up straight.

I nodded before I said goodbye and closed the door. I turned around to see Katelyn giggling. Katelyn never giggles.

"What?" I asked.

"Someone's got a crush," she teased.

"N-no I don't!" I shouted back, slightly blushing.

Did I have a crush on Eli? I asked myself.

Katelyn and I spent the rest of the day around the village helping out people. Whenever Eli passed by and we made eye contact he waved over to me and I waved back. Then, Katelyn would start teasing me again.

The sun started to set so Katelyn and I headed back to the guest house. It had been a long day, and I hoped that the rest of it would not be as wild.
