I almost wished I had impaled the son of Hades.
I was at my usual spot when I heard Marry calling my name. I stood and peered around the Poseidon cabin to see Marry standing, calling to me.
"Claire! Where are you? Claire?" she called.
I walked around the cabin and tapped on her shoulder. She jumped and turned to look at me. She sighed and rubbed her chest.
"How do you do that, appearing out of nowhere?" she asked.
"You called?" I asked. Marry smiled.
"Polish your sword, tonight's capture the flag!" I smiled, and it slowly widened until I was practically baring my teeth at her. Capture the flag was the only camp activity I truly enjoyed.
I walked back to the Hermes cabin with Marry, I always left my sword in a special case under my bed. Back when I was more open at Camp Half-Blood, I had asked a friend form the Hephaestus cabin to make me this sword and case. I pulled it out and opened it. The blade was slightly dusty, but still in excellent shape. It was a celestial bronze sword with a curved blade and black leather handle. My favorite color.
We walked out of the cabin and followed the crowd of demigods to dinner. I sat at the end of the table like usual, but Marry sat a little closer than usual. I didn't mind, but I still grateful for the few inches between us.
My whole body seemed to buzz with the excitement of capture the flag. Too slowly for my taste, Chiron finally stood to address the crowd of demigods.
"Another game of capture the flag is upon us, my friends!" Chiron said, the whole mess hall went silent. "At the sound of the couch, the game will begin! You all know what teams you're on. Let's quickly review the rules: No maiming or killing any campers or your s'mores privileges are revoked. No truces between two member of opposite teams. And finally, no fighting after the games over." A cheer went around because the Chiron dismissed them, letting everyone get in positions for the game.
I followed the Hermes cabin towards the woods. We merged with the others part of our team. I'm on blue team, last time I was on blue as well. Red team won the last two times, the winning team picks the first five cabins they want and the losing team and them take turns picking the last cabins for next game.
The red team was made up of the Ares cabin, Athena, Hephaestus, Apollo, Hades, Iris, Hypnos, and the Hebe cabin. Blue team is the Nike cabin, Hecate, Zeus, Nemesis, Demeter, Aphrodite, Hermes, Tyche, and Dionysus. I hoped we would win this week, I've never brought the flag back to my team, but I still dreamed of being congratulated and praised for it.
The seventeen cabins split into blue and red team, going separate ways. We stopped and Damien White stood on a rock to address the crowd. They had nominated him the leader after his close win last week.
"Okay, Blue team, listen up." Damien called out to us. "Some people say we can't win because we're stuck with the bad cabins. Do you guys think that?"
"No!" Everyone roared back.
He smiled a wicked smile. "I've spent all week planning a way to get revenge of Red team." Cheers came form the crowd. I liked Damien, he had a fiendish mind. "Okay, Nike cabin, Zeus, Hermes, Dionysus, and Nemesis are offense. Jason?" Jason Grace nodded, he would lead them. "The rest are defense. I will lead defense here." Murmurs came from the demigods, his cabin was offense but he was staying behind. Everyone thought he'd want to lead them to victory. "Remember, a good defense is the best offense." The cabins split and the defense left to plant the flag.
Claire was walking side by side with Marry as they were lead through the woods. They heard some talking ahead and Jason, the Zeus cabin councilor, turned to look at all of us.
