Making friends

I rush back to the class, a small and useless plan coming together in my head but whether or not it's actually going to work remains a mystery. As I turn to go in the class, I bump into Mathias himself.
"Mattie! Hey!" I cheerfully greet, suspiciously darting my eyes around the area.
"Kaia, right? Are you okay?" He asks, obviously seeing through me like I'm made of glass!
"Yeah, fine. Never been better!" Awkwardly, I chuckle and rush into the class, my best friend's eyebrows wiggling at me teasingly.
"Oh shut up that was awkward." I complain, sitting at my desk which is next to hers.
"You've been rushing around all over the place. What's up?" She asks me and for a single moment, I contemplate telling her the truth; at the last minute I decide against it.
"Oh just teacher errands. You know how it can be sometimes." I lie with a giggle. Fortunately for me, she buys it and that's the last I hear of the subject.
"So what was that liquorice you made us get on the way to school for?" She asks me, finally remembering our little stop before school.
"I just owe someone some." I say, yet another half-truth. I didn't owe anyone anything, really; I just chose to bribe someone.
"Did they take it?"
"Sort of," I answer, remembering how quickly our little meet up turned south. If I am going to bribe Lukas I need to know what he likes and the only person who can really tell me that for now is...
"Mathias..." I utter under my breath to myself but Ella overhears.
"What?" Her face morphs into a confused look.
"Oh, nothing." I answer back. A single light at the far end of the class flickers just once before returning to its normal state. Maybe I am that light and this schoolgirl crush is only a flicker and I'll return back to normal in no time. Who knows... On cue, he strolls cheerfully into the room, automatically heading over to a group of girls huddled around a single magazine. I can't really deny I love him. I know I do so is there any use trying to persuade myself I don't? Ella notices me staring over at him.
"Doesn't he seem a bit..."
"A bit what, Ella, spit it out." I order, looking over at the boy himself.
"Effeminate?" She shrugs, her short ginger hair shining in the sun. He sits there with his cute danish accent as he laughs with his friend, who I stated would be perfect for Ella.
"You're basically calling him feminine?" I ask her pathetically and she nods in reply, pointing to him as he starts to play with Lukas' hair and gaze longingly at a group of girls' fake nails, stating he wished he could paint them as good as that.
"Do you really think he paints his nails?" I ask her and she shrugs.
"With Mathias who knows?"
Honestly, it sucks being in love but being in love with Mathias sucks ten times more and to think it's only going to get worse.

So much worse.
