"I'm telling you can you really fit a sponge in a pineapple? Now is everyone in bikini bottom tiny, or is everything else massive?" I ask Ella, who seems utterly uninterested in my question.
"I'm telling you, Kaia, you attend Mika Academy and your teacher is not going to be happy if you hand that in as an essay." She answers, throwing a piece of spearmint gum into her mouth carelessly. It's been weeks and already I've seen her lighten up from her heartbreak.
"Well, El," I start, referring to her by her nickname. "I think you'll like my science project." And after just a few chews, she spits the gum back out, seeming surprised and worried.
"That's due today?"
"No, not that project...I'm talking about Project WTF." I explain, placing my Spongebob essay back into my rucksack.
"What does the WTF stand for?" She asks.
"It stands for 'what the fuck', are you an idiot?" I question in reply. We both laugh and she asks me about it. "Well, I'm planning to impress Mathias at the Mika Festival by taking him into the haunted mansion event and cuddling him if he gets too scared." Truth is, the Mika Festival is less than a week away and I'm planning to use Emil to distract Lukas so I can get closer to Mathias and this seems perfect.
"Kaia you told a me to turn The Shining off and you were crying into a pillow for the next three nights you had to spend at mine." She explains.
"And? Who can blame me, it's a scary film?"
"We were only one minute in." She then adds sassily. The classroom goes silent as Mathias enters, which is weird and he looks straight to me, silently motioning me to come with his finger. He leaves and as I follow, I take one last glance at my best friend before going.
"Kaia...you're not going to believe what's just happened..."
