Chapter 17- The Real Threat
As the next four weeks passed, Opren began to master both his control of the Goldspell's energy while it was inside of him and how to heal instantly at any time while in Goldpsell form. His skill with swords and hand to hand fighting began to exceed anything Rufius, Emerald or the others could match if he gave it his all. Even the vampires struggled to spar with him some nights when he fought at his best.
Early in the fourth week, Durv had assigned Zix as Opren's new partner for air combat upon Zix's request. Opren discovered how fast Zix could actually fly, and he was happy he had already learned how to ride from Durv and Lot because Zix was not calm on a regular basis- not to mention on good days. This made flying with the smaller dragon at high speeds difficult, as Zix enjoyed spinning, spiraling and looping. Opren knew the dodging and charging capabilities with this dragon- especially because of his somewhat smaller than average size- would be very valuable in any actual air combat, but the practice to hold on was another story.
After the four weeks of practice advancing things already learned, Polaris agreed to help Opren with Stage Three of the Goldspell.
"I'm still not understanding how to output the energy once I absorb it from the Goldspell," Opren said on the second day of his tutoring, an hour into practice.
"Here. I will enchant this item and remove the enchantment, and then produce something with that energy so you can see it work," Polaris replied. He picked up a shield and put his palm to the center, causing it to glow dimly. He proceeded to make it glow brighter by touching it again and his arm also glowed. "This is how far you have gotten... " Polaris paused. He put the shield down and raised his glowing arm, palm forward. A small rock rose to his hand and then grew quickly into a glowing shield of stone as the energy around Polaris' arm slowly disappeared. "...and this is what you need to be able to do. You already do this, if you really think about it, when you produce the single sword. The two swords coming from the first sword should be a good example of how to make multiple objects."
"I can watch Rufius cast lightning, too, but that doesn't mean I can do it like he does. Doing and observing are two different things," Opren said, irritated with his inability to mimic the wizard as of yet. Barbosa joined them after apparently having bathed.
Already doubting yourself, Opren. I guess I'll have to go recruit a new captain, Barbosa remarked as he walked to a nearby fence to lay down and watch.
"Shut your mouth, Barbosa. I just haven't been able to do this soon enough for my liking," Opren replied. "Patience isn't my strongest virtue." Barbosa agreed with this statement and chuckled.
"Now try to do what I did by using the energy from the Goldspell. Create the weapon as you would your first sword, but instead of changing the orb into it, produce it with a core of only energy from the Goldspell's essence that you put into the air. I used a rock as my core to form a stone shield. This was almost identical to the orb changing forms. You should use the pure energy itself to make a magical sword," Polaris said.
Opren changed into Goldspell form, but allowed the orb to keep its original shape, and absorbed the energy as each other time. He raised his left hand, while keeping the orb in his right, attempting to push the energy out of his palm.
For the first three attempts, nothing happened, but then he managed to get a flicker of golden light to appear briefly.
"Alright. I understand now, but this seems to require a hellish amount more energy than either of the first two stages. I know I'm using the Goldspell's energy so I am not tired but the amount I absorbed could have healed my entire body and would have allowed several hundred spells, yet it only produced a spark of visible energy," Opren said with a tone of minor frustration. He did the same process again, but this time absorbed as much energy as he could in a few seconds, pushing harder for the energy to be released. This time, a lasting ball of golden energy, very similar to the original orb but not solid matter, appeared. Opren focused, trying to make it form a sword, but instead it formed a dagger. "Great. I suppose. I formed a knife in place of a sword, but at least I have a weapon." Opren said sarcastically. Polaris shrugged and Opren scoffed.
