I HAVE THEM.
“Who the heck is this?” Raphael had his eyes on his phone. “Some unknown person just sent me a text.”
“What does it say?” Bane's dark brows knitted in a frown.
Raphael handed us his phone, and we read the words. What did they mean?
“You don’t think…” I had an awful feeling in my gut. I dreaded the worst had happened to Ryan and my mother. Oh God, if they had taken my mother…
I HAVE BOTH RYAN AND JANE. I WANT JARED IN EXCHANGE. MEET ME AT THE RUN-DOWN JETTY TONIGHT, 11 PM SHARP.
Raphael’s phone vibrated as another text message came in. “It’s definitely one of them,” he sighed depressingly. “When will they ever stop bugging us?”
“Wait, why me? What do they want with me?” I exclaimed.
“Beats me,” Bane shrugged. “So, do we listen to whoever that is?”
“I don’t think we have a choice,” Raphael had a very frustrated expression on his face. “There’s a third message.”
I WILL KILL THEM IF JARED DOES NOT SHOW UP. AND BY JARED, I MEAN ONLY JARED. ANYONE ELSE WHO SHOWS UP DURING THAT TIME WILL BE KILLED.
“Dammit,” Bane cursed. “What is their problem with us?”
“Their problem with me, you mean,” I was already fuming. Who did they think they were, messing around with us like that? “We now know that they only need me, and no one else.”
“We can’t listen to them, man,” Raphael said, gripping his phone so hard I was expecting it to crack in his palm. “It’s a bad choice to listen to our enemies. If you show up…”
“Raph, like you said, we don’t have a damn choice,” I let out a deep breath, tried to calm down.
SON OF A B-.
I watched Raphael as he quickly typed the words, and hit send. “You’re…you’re going to do this, aren’t you?” he eyed me.
“I have to,” I said. “I have to save my mother, and your father. That’s all that matters.”
“Jared-” Bane began to say.
I held up a hand to cut him off, and gave the two men a dead serious look. “I’m going to save Ryan and my mother, and no one will be able to stop me.”

“Why are you doing this?” Jane was once again tied up with her hands behind her back. “How could you treat me like this? What do you want with Jared?”
“You shut up,” Jayden spun around, his eyes glowing with fury. “You shall remain quiet, or I will kill you.”
“You leave her alone,” Ryan said from a few feet away. He had injured Jayden badly, but he wasn’t strong enough to finish him off.
In fact, he hadn’t been strong enough to stop Jayden from injecting him with the poison.
“You nearly bit off my arm, you freaking idiot!” Jayden yelled. He had lost plenty of blood, but he had managed to call up Seth, and he had sent some of his men to help him almost right away. “You deserve to die. Once that poison eats through you, you’ll be dead.”
“Why are you doing this? Snap out of it, Jayden! Snap out of it!” Jane shouted, and tears were beginning to flow down her cheeks. “You’re my son, Jayden. You’re my son…”
“Not anymore,” Jayden snarled.
“You want how many of my men, exactly?” Seth said into the phone.
