Chapter 14: I Can’t Do This

Previously in Code Red:

“Ryder?” I squeaked, glancing at Dylan with a petrified look. He looked back down at me with the same look, clearly as scared as I felt. Before I knew it, Ryder was already dragging Dylan out of the gymnasium. What did I get myself into?! I quickly looked around for anyone and when I spotted Amber first, I dashed to her side. “Amber!”

“What’s wrong?” She immediately broke away from Jack and looked at me with horrified eyes.

“You have to help me! It’s a Code Red situation!”

Dylan’s POV

Shit, shit, shit, he was going to kill me! I could see it now, Dylan Stone: Beaten to death by outraged brother, Ryder Parris. Yep, I could definitely see it.

He dragged me out of the gymnasium and out of the school, pulling me to the side of the building. “So you and my sister, huh?”

“Uh, what?” That’s all he had to say? Now that he’s going to kill me? Just a simple question? “Uh, well nothing’s official.”

“Oh, well I’m not here to kill you or anything.” I let out a sigh of relief and he chuckled in return. “But if you do hurt her again, I will take no time in hurting you until you don’t know the time of day. Got it?” His eyes blazed with a certain determination and I knew he wasn’t lying. I nodded my head, and started to turn to go back in. “But I’m glad you guys finally got over yourselves.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I whirled around to face him once again. The night sky was cold, the wind blowing in our direction. The moon shone bright, creating light on the side of the building.

“Everyone was surprised that you guys actually made it two years without talking to each other,” He explained more elaborately, but I was still left confused. When I was about to ask him to explain again, Nina’s panicked voice rang through our ears.

“Dylan?! Ryder?! Oh God, where are you guys?” Her heels clattered against the pavement as she turned around the side of building. “Oh thank God.”

“I’m fine,” I smiled, looking at how beautiful she looked tonight. She would always beat Ronnie, in personality, looks… She would actually beat any girl. Amber came out from behind her, looking just as worried.

“Wait, you mean he didn’t kill you yet?” She sounded so bewildered and confused that it was actually cute.

“No, I didn’t hurt him, we just had a chat,” Ryder threw his arm over my shoulders and smirked at his sister. “Well, I’ll leave you two alone. Come on Amber.” As they walked away, Amber’s voice started complaining.

“She dragged me out here!”

“Oh, shut up Amber. We’ll get you back to dance with your king.”

Nina giggled from feet away from me but it still sounded clear as day.

“You were worried about me?” I grinned, staring at the beautiful girl in front of me. Her hair flew from behind her due to the wind and I noticed how she shivered.

“Not at all,” She sarcastically remarked, biting her lip to stop from smiling.

“Uh huh, sure.” I gave her a pointed look to which she rolled her eyes. “Come on, let’s get back inside,” I slipped my hand around her waist, pulling her closer so that she would be covered from the cold. We walked inside in a comfortable silence until we were surrounded by the student body and the music blaring. I spun her around and started to dance with her.
