“Hails! Vivian! Rebecca! Alyssa! Call Travis Now!”

I jolted up in a cold sweat and screaming the names of my friends. I look around, hoping to see my room and hoping to be laying in my own bed. I’m hoping this is all a horrible dream, but it isn’t. All I can see is the brick walls of the cell and the thick metal bars the keep me trapped in here like I’m some sort of dog or a fucking bird. It’s still dark throughout the entire cell block with only a sliver of light coming from the room where the watch guard is most likely sleeping. The only sound I hear is the light stirring of my cell mate, Miranda. I must have woken her up with my screaming.

“How many times are you going to wake me up with all of your screaming. What is this, the second week you’ve done this every night?” She’s obviously pissed.

“I’m really, really, really sorry. I’m just a little shaken.  That’s all.” I sniffled on the verge of tears.

“Are you ready to tell me why you’re in here, or are you going to keep screaming at the most inconvenient hours of the night” Maybe talking about it would make me feel a little better.

“Well, it started when I met this guy in the first week of school. His name is Travis. We became really good friends and eventually started dating, but it was weird because I never saw him around school and I really only saw him early before school or after. He would come to my house when my parents were away or at work. We would kiss and it would get intense, and I would tell him I wasn’t ready, but he touched me. Only once. Anyways, after we got comfortable with each other, we would start to get into heated make-out sessions and one day he told me he loved me, and I told him the same thing. He asked if he could trust me and if he could tell me something. Come to find out Travis is actually eighteen and has terrible drug problem.  He also drinks and before he met me he would have sex with anything that had legs and was breathing. Then, he told me he was adopted and that’s why he started drugs and drinking and having casual sex, to take away the pain, y’know? Then he convinced me to help him try to find his family. During all this time, we could do stupid stuff, like egg houses or knock hubcaps, but we never got caught. This went on for weeks and I was really enjoying myself. I liked the idea of having an older boyfriend who had experience with girls and was willing to do stupid things for fun. One day, after school I went to his house and we continued to look for his parents, but got tired and bored. Travis had this insane idea of breaking into the school and vandalizing a room of one of the teachers he hated. I hesitated but did it anyway because I wanted him to think I was willing to do anything. I mean I was already lucky enough to be a fourteen year old dating an eighteen year old. So, I did it. I had fun and I thought that when we got back to his house, that maybe it would be the night. Maybe he was willing to show me how much he really loved me, because so far, we had gotten pretty close but never did it. That night, we were lying on his bed watching some movie and got bored. He reached over and pulled me onto his lap. We stayed like that for a while, me laying on his chest and him rubbing small circles on my back, but then he said ‘Claire, I need to tell you something. And, it’s really important, so if you could just hear me out…’ That’s when I started getting worried. I let him say what he had to say. I had a whirlwind of emotions going on. I felt betrayed and confused and most of all I was pissed as hell. You know what he told me? He told me that he wasn’t adopted, he just ran away from home, and we’re related. Were cousins. I almost fucked my cousin. I had told my mom I was spending the night with Vivian that night, so I couldn’t very well go home. I stayed at Travis’s house on his couch. The next morning he came down and told me he was sorry he hadn’t told me before but he met me and fell for me and didn’t want to ruin us. I shrugged him off so he went to the kitchen and started drinking. Then he started doing his morning shot of heroin. He kept asking me to join him, which wasn’t unusual, but this morning it was different. I told him off then left for a morning acapella rehearsal with girls. About twenty minutes into rehearsal, Haily’s boyfriend came in freaking out and through all the chaos; I was called to the front office. None of the others hear me get called or noticed me leaving. When I got to the office Mrs. Fisher, the principal told me that they have video surveillance of my vandalizing and they also found weed in the room. All signs pointed to me because Travis picked the lock to the front door and told me that he would wait in the car. When I was being escorted out, I screamed for my friend and told them to call Travis. I guess nobody heard me and that’s why I’m stuck here with no contact from them.”
