Alyssa’s P.O.V.
“Alright girls, time for Flore’s accapella boot camp!” Our chorus teacher announces to the five of us as we sit looking at her with varying degrees of interest.
“Rule #1: Breathe in the vowel.” I look around to see Rebecca staring blankly at the wall, Vivian bored because she already knows this, and Haily and Claire stupidly breathing in and out while waving their arms up and down in front of them. I slowly raise my hand, unsure of whether I should interrupt the hyperventilation that Mrs. Flore seems proud to have started.
“Yes Alyssa?” She says as she notices my hand in the quickly receding air thanks to Haily and Claire.
“I uh…” I start and motion towards the door, “I have to go.” Mrs. Flore stared at me looking slightly confused. “Umm…May I leave?” I ask trying to get my point across. Slowly the confused expression melts into an upset one.
“Now girls. I have happily volunteered my limited time to help you with this, and if you don’t even show interest in being here why should I?” She takes a breath and opens her mouth to continue talking, but I cut her off.
“I really appreciate you helping Mrs. Flore, but today just really wasn’t a good day. I have somewhere I really need to be. The other girls will still be here.” I say hoping I sound convincing. Mrs. Flore studies my face and then sighs.
“Alright. Don’t let it happen again, otherwise you will have to find someone else to help you.” She says dismissing me.
“Thanks!” I say happily and gather my things.
“Now let’s try it all together girls. One…Two…Three…Breathe.” I hear as I walk out the door and I laugh to myself because I know that Rebecca is still in her own little world.
~~~~~~~~~
“Ahh! There she is!” I am greeted by a familiar voice as I walk in the door of Chickfila.
“Hey babe.” I say as I walk over to the beautiful boy sitting at a table in the back corner of the building.
“I think you have met Mark and Brandon right?” Dakota, my boyfriend, says while smiling sweetly up at me.
“No, I don’t think so.” I say while taking the seat next to him and examining the two boys seated across from us.
“Oh well Mark goes to school with you.” Dakota says innocently while realization hits me like a shit load of bricks. Holy. Fuck.
“Right. Mark.” I say slowly staring at him in disbelief. “We had detention together yesterday.” I continue still staring at Mark.
“Umm. Yeah I think I remember seeing you there,” Mark says shyly. “Is something wrong?” He says giving me a weird look. Shit I’m staring.
“Oh no. I’m fine.” I quickly look away and return my gaze to Dakota who is looking between the two of us accusingly. “It’s okay babe.” I say softly so the other two won’t hear. “So how do you two know each other?” I say still afraid to look back up at Mark.
“Brandon introduced us actually.” Mark said blankly. I cautiously look up at him and immediately wish I hadn’t. His weird look had turned into a death glare. I drop my head fast so that I am looking at my hands in my lap.
“Yeah, Brandon goes to your school too, and I have known Brandon for….oh gosh who knows how long! We just decided to catch up recently since we haven’t seen each other in a while and…Alyssa?” Dakota says excitedly
“Yes?” I say not looking up from my lap.
“Do you want to go?” Dakota asked sounding very concerned. I battle myself inside my head for a moment. Yes, I really want to go. No, I don’t want to give them the impression that Dakota has a weird girlfriend. I know how much he likes it when I meet and get along with his friends, but I just can’t this time.
“Alyssa?” Oh shit I still haven’t answered.
“Umm…yeah, actually. I don’t feel too good.” I say hoping he will buy it.
“Okay. I’ll take you home.” He offers.
“Thank you.” I reply simply as he starts to get up.
“I’m just going to go the bathroom and then we will go. If that is okay. If you want to go now we can do that.” He rambles slightly sounding genuinely worried.
“No it’s fine. I can wait.” I smile up at him and he walks away. I owe him that much after making him leave. I slowly return my gaze to Mark who is still staring at me intensely. “S-sorry.” I stutter sounding as weak as I feel under his glare.
“For what?” he replies.
“I’m not usually like this.” I say already mentally beating myself up the moment it comes out.
“Right. I can tell. You are a completely different person now then you are around your friends.” His reply making my blood run cold.
“Please. Just don’t talk about this with Rebecca. They don’t know about Dakota and I.” I explain quickly. His look turns from angry to amused.
“Oh. I see.” He says smirking.
“What is that for!” I shriek, appalled.
“It’s just…great.” What? “You are keeping him from your friends. So secretive.” He starts then suddenly makes determined eye contact with me as he leans in. “So scandalous.” He says whispering. What the fuck?
“It’s not like that.” I say not amused at all.
“I’m sure. It just sounds so storybook to me. So cliché. But whatever. I believe that Dakota knows what he is doing. Messing around with a two-faced priss like you leading a double life so desperately hoping that one won’t collide with the other. It’s okay. Really. I understand totally why he would want to, and you are convincing, but not quite enough to fool me.” He says staring intently into my eyes with all seriousness, but a voice dripping with sarcasm.
“No. You don’t know anything! And we aren’t just messing around! He loves me! Right?....Right! and-“ I could feel tears start to burn at the corners of my eyes. What the hell is going on. Wait… “Hold on. You were all fun and jokes when you were with Rebecca! Who are you to tell me that I am leading a double life?” I almost yell proud of myself for turning this back around on him. I sit back in my chair satisfied until he replied sweetly.
“I told you I understand. We both just want to have the best of both worlds.” Did he just quote fucking Hannah Montana at me?
“Hell no! You know what? Tell them! Call Rebecca right now and tell her all about how I am dating a tall, muscular, dark haired beauty because I am sure as hell going to walk out of here and drive straight to her house to tell her all about who you really are when she isn’t looking!” I yell literally feeling steam coming out of my ears.
“Please. You wouldn’t tear her away from her soul mate would you? And I really don’t want to mess up your perfect little fairytale. So we can both keep each other’s secrets for now, and maybe someday I will trust you enough to tell you my REAL secret.” He finishes calmly as Dakota returns to the table.
“Where did Brandon go?” Dakota asks. I look at the seat that was once occupied. I was so distracted by Mark playing mind games that I didn’t realize that he left.
“He had to go.” Mark said getting up from the table.
“Okay. Let’s go Alyssa.” Dakota said simply which seemed so strange after such an intense conversation. I followed Dakota towards the door leading to the parking lot, and as I looked back I saw Mark standing there with that same vicious smirk on his face that made me feel the need for a winter coat while standing in 80 degree weather.
