You woke up, rubbing the sleep out of your eyes. On your drawer, your eyes fell on a piece of paper, accompanied with a red rose. You picked it up and read it.

Every day your happiness is rubbed off on me. Your smile is kind and sweet. Don't stop smiling; it'll hurt me.

You wondered who sent this to you. This was the fifth note you received. You stood up and put the note with the others. You put the rose in a vase with four others. Absent-mindedly, you thought about the notes. The notes were thoughtful and you secretly craved them. They made you feel good about yourself, especially when Alois yelled at you when you did something wrong. Now if only you knew the person who sent them . . .

You got ready for work; you were a maid for the Trancy household. Alois generally treated you well, claiming you "weren't stupid like the rest of them." Sometimes, however, Alois lost his temper and screamed at you. Those were the days you received the notes and flowers. It wasn't Alois, was it? No, you dismissed the idea immediately. Alois hadn't given any indication he liked you, and besides, you didn't think of Alois like that. He was your master, nothing more, nothing less.

Your head snapped up as you heard Claude walk in the room.

"Miss Y/N, His Highness is calling us," Claude said.

"Oh. Do you know why?"

"No," he replied curtly. "We must go. Now."

You nodded and walked behind him. After spending a couple of minutes in silence, you gathered up the courage to ask, "Claude, do you know who's been leaving the notes and flowers in my room?"

He hesitated slightly before saying, "No, Miss Y/N. I don't."

"Oh," you replied.

"Do you like them?" he asked stoically.

"Very much so." You smiled.

You arrived at the dining room. You knocked carefully. You heard a "come in!" You walked in and asked, "Your Highness, what do you need?"

Alois scowled before saying, "You're late. Where were you?"

"Apologies, Your Highness, I was in my room. Claude came and told me you wanted to see us," you said, eyes downcast.

"Yes, Claude! What took you so long?" he shouted. "You know I hate tardiness!"

"My apologies, Your Highness," Claude calmly uttered. "The walk here took a long time."

"Excuses!" Alois yelled. "And you, Y/N! You're a lousy excuse for a maid. Get out of my sight!"

"Your Highness," you muttered before leaving.

You ran to your room, tears streaming down your face. You flopped on the bed and buried your face in a pillow. You wanted to stay there, in your bed, away from everyone. You eventually went to sleep.

A creaking noise woke you up. You kept still and didn't open your eyes. Curiosity got the better of you and you open your eyes. In the dark, you saw a figure hunched over the drawer next to your bed. You could see it was Claude.

"I know you're awake," he whispered.

You sat up and saw he placed a note and a flower on your drawer. You smiled and reached for the note.

You're beautiful, please, be mine.

Your eyes widened and you looked at Claude.

"You were the one who wrote these notes? The flowers?" you asked.

"Yes," he simply said.

"Why?"

"I dislike seeing you upset. In the presence of Alois, I cannot do anything. It would only make things worse." He hesitated. "And, you made me feel things I thought I could never feel."

It was Claude the whole time. Claude was the one who cared, thought you were beautiful and loved you.

You looked up and saw Claude standing closer to you. He put a gloved hand on your cheek. His eyes gave no emotion, but you could tell he cared deeply about you. Claude's golden eyes closed and he closed the small gap of space between you. Your eyes fluttered closed and you kissed him back, wrapping your arms around his neck. This made you feel better, better than you ever felt. You knew then, that Claude could make you feel better; you just needed him.
