An Old Dance*

Lightly they come
On their tippy toes
Twirling and spinning
A beautiful dance on my heart
Though as their feet graze the scars that they made
Pain flashes in every bend of its elegance
It is a striking reminder that I can't go back
That every promise made was broken and
Every note was cut
And In the wish of the dancers skirt
It whips longing my way
I feel the beat spell out every wish you ever made
My tongue takes it all back
Takes every word and moment
Poisons it with a harsh drum
No one see the dancers on my heart
But hear every sinister song I sing
Your a monster to the music of my ears
The hero to the rhythm in my heart
So no matter how the idea plays it's grace
I know it's only that way from the backstage
That if I were to dance your rhythm
Play off our tension
I know I would sing a tragedy
So dear love of mine
They perform your wishes so fine
But sadly I can only let you shine.
