Castiel pushed Metatron down the stairs into the old abandoned library. He was angry to even be here.
"Do you really expect me to believe that you hid my Grace in a library?" Castiel complained upon sight of this deserted place.
"Nobody goes to libraries anymore. It's the safest place in the world." Metatron argued. You turned the lights on and thousands of books were seen for aisles and aisles.
"I can feel my Grace." Castiel stopped feeing the tiny longing in his neck, "It's here but you've hidden it somehow. Where is it?"
"Honestly, I have no idea." Metatron sheugged, Castiel pushes Metatron into a chair and squeezes his leg intensely, and his Angelic grip crushing his bones.
"Where is it?" Castiel urged.
"Oh! Gah! I don't know, I swear!" Metatron yelled in pain, "I had another angel hide it, even from me." Castiel squeezes the leg even harder. "Aah! You know, in case someone tries to torture the information out of me! Case in point!"
"Where is my Grace?" Castiel repeated.
"I told the angel to hide some clues in some of my favorite books." He holds up his handcuffed wrists to you, "Mother, may I?"
You looked at Castiel for approval then unlocked his handcuffs. Metatron limped over to a shelf and pulled out a book. Castiel takes the book and opened it, removing the note inside.
"'What is the maddest thing a man can do?'" Castiel read aloud.
"It's a riddle? What – what's the answer?" You asked.
"Beats me. I've only been a man a day." Metatron mumbled. You glared at him, "Um, the – the answer to the riddle will lead to another book. And inside that book, you'll find your Grace." He saw that both you and Castiel were very tired of his games, "We're gonna work this out together, okay? Teamwork."
~
"You know, we really do make a good team." Metatron spoke up as you followed him through the library, you knew most of the references and wanted to do this as quickly as possible. Castiel was in a different aisle to look for more dusty books. Metatron continued, "Kind of like a Bonnie and Clyde romantic duo, without the death."
"Or the romance." You scoffed.
"Oh now, come on. Back at the diner, that was some pretty amazing chemistry." Metatron smirked.
"What is happening here is unfortunate. I don't want to be around you any longer than I have to." You said to him, lingering your fingers along the books.
"So you're just going to dump me? After all this?" Metatron turned to you with puppy dog eyes, you rolled your eyes, "Don't tell me you're into 'Ass'-tiel-"
"Shut up, and keep working." Castiel came from the next aisle to intervene. He couldn't stand feeling his grace here and not being able to have it.
"No! If I'm gonna die, I want answers. Like, who are you now? Like, you're obviously not an angel of the Lord. And what about all of this walking the earth like Caine from "Kung Fu" crap? Cleaning up Heaven's messes." Metatron ranted, you and Cass stood there waiting for him to finish. "How many more rogue angels are there out there? And, what are you gonna do once you're done with all that? Go back to Heaven? Please. The angel formerly known as Hannah has restored order up top. Smoothest it's run since God cut the ribbon on the pearly gates. So tell me, Castiel, truly, what is your mission now?"
"You shut up and keep looking." Castiel walks away. You follow him to the next aisle, you could see his frustration and your first need was to help your friend.
"Castiel-" you called from behind him quietly.
"Well..." Metatron touched books on the shelf with his finger, then gets blood on his finger from his wound. We then see that he's drawn blood sigils on the books.
"Why can't we just kill him now? I know my grace is near. We can find it on our own."
"Cannot say I didn't try." Metatron activated the sigils and walks toward Castiel in the next row. Castiel is coughing and collapses. You followed suit, it felt like the wind was knocked out of you, or rather the Angel in you. For all Metatron knew was you were another Angel. "Poor Castiel. Swam so far just to drown in shallow waters. Isn't it ironic? Don't ya think?"
Castiel is on the ground, you stayed leaning against a book shelf, and Metatron is taking a book from the shelf next to you.
"All right...First things first – find what I really came here for." He takes a note out of the book and reads it. "'What two things do you need to succeed in life?' Ah-ha! Ignorance and confidence."
Castiel looks at the note from the first book. "They're quotes." Castiel coughed out. And finally the first one made sense. You thought they were riddles and questions answered by book titles but they were quotes.
"So, uh...did you both plus samateur hour really think I wouldn't have a back-up plan?" Metatron locates a book and opens it to reveal a tablet. Castiel stays keeled over. You began to move down another aisle looking for a book, holding your rib cage. "Ah. Hello Demon Tablet."
You grab out "Don Quixote" by Miguel Cervantes and knock it off the shelf. The container with Castiel's Grace falls out of the book.
"The places I'll go with this." Metatron limps to the row you were in and sees you have the container with Castiel's Grace. "And Castiel's Grace. Well, one out of two ain't bad." Metatron hurries away. You were feeling yourself gain energy back quicker than Cass was.
You kneeled next to him. Opening the container with his Grace. At first he couldn't look up to receive it.
"What's the maddest thing a man can do?" You muttered, holding it open for him.
"Let himself die." Castiel inhales his Grace. He stands up, papers russle and fly around you. A bright light is emitted from his body and his eyes glow so bright it's hard to focus. Behind him broken wings are shadowed around him, feathers fall but his wingspan is immense. At last, Cass has his full power back.
