The moment Ebony came to a stop without Charlotte's word, she knew something was amiss.
The way his ears were erect and the way his neck and muscles had stiffened showed her he was on edge.
"What is it, Ebony?" Charlotte stroked his soft mane, giving his muscular neck a comforting pat to calm him. He responded with a short huff and his ears twitched towards the sea. He turned his head.
Charlotte looked up and panned her gaze across the horizon. The moon hid shyly behind a thicket of clouds and a steady fog settled across the surface of the black Caribbean waters. Charlotte concluded Ebony simply did not favour storms.
Though her assumption seemed logical to her, there was an uncanny sense of suspicion that pestered her in the back of her mind. A suspicion that told her she may be wrong.

And then she spotted it.
There, amidst the veil of fog, was a small shadow creeping in the horizon. Her breath caught when the shadow fully formed through the clouds.
It was a ship sailing towards the island.
A ship with black sails.
In morbid awe, she watched as the ship sped forward.
And just as she stood there, frozen a little light flashed from the ship.
Then there was a whistle and suddenly part of the Fort was blown into the crashing sea beneath.
