Annabeth, Snape and Luke left Elysium under the cover of the red glow of the fields of punishment.

The screams of tormented souls drowned out their approach and masked their footsteps.

None of them spoke. Annabeth had worked out that Snape was more of the silent type.

He hadn't spoken much, and the few things that he had said hadn't given Annabeth much of a handle on him, she couldn't place his personality.

Luke was the same Luke that Annabeth remembered from before Kronos corrupted him, just with a bit more sorrow in his eyes.

Annabeth checked the map that Nico had given her, “we need to go through Asphodel.” She told them.

“I guess it's better than the fields of punishment,” Luke grinned.

The fields of Asphodel were just as Hazel had described them. The spirits chattered away, almost like they were communicating. Their clambering voices were so loud that Annabeth wanted to put her hands over her ears to drown out the noise.

That was when Annabeth noticed Hades. For some reason her great uncle was in his black chariot pulled by his skeletal horses. Spirits were jumping out of his way so that they didn't get run over. And he was heading straight for them.

“Guys,” Annabeth hissed and pointed towards Hades.

“Hide,” Snape said, before he dived into the crowd and was concealed behind a wall of spirits. Luke grabbed Annabeth’s arm and pulled her into a wall of them as well.

Hades’ chariot rolled past and he continued through Asphodel. Annabeth didn't dare to move until she was sure Hades was long gone.

Eventually she got to her feet and pulled Luke up too.

“C’mon, we need to keep going,” Annabeth told him.
