smile when you die

the handprints stalking up the wall

that rattling gasps or nothingness

sing when you sleep

whisper 'no fear, no fear'

cry out for mercy with a last breath breathed

and wonder if they hear you

is death cold?

i've always wondered if it feels like a burial

lying under a blanket of grass and leaves

nothing's warm up there but the stars -

they say the sun burns hot but i still feel the chill

you showed me how to map the veins of space

in and out and up and down

lulling me to sleep with songs about memories

telling me i'm a legend

a girl of stardust and storm

but i feel too small

to be much other than a leaf on the wind

a breathless lost cause, a broken red string

you told me to make history

so i started a war
