Loki smiled from behind his book. Sigyn gave him a small smile in return, continuing to dust his vanity table. They played this game every time they were in his quarters together, and Loki loved playing. Games were easy enjoyment for him, and he fooled around with this servant girl more than he expected to. He could tell that she was becoming more comfortable around him, but she was still shy and reserved. Loki wanted to do everything in his power to get to know her more. There was something about her that drew him in.
It was not like he never saw her before. All throughout his life he had seen her, but he never really seen her. It was that party long ago when he actually noticed her for the first time, and he thought she was so intriguing. Her hair was such a beautiful dark golden blonde, and he loved the way strands of her hair fell right in front of her face. He had pointed her out to Thor, who shrugged his shoulders. Thor did not care about a meager servant girl who had lived with them her entire life. Thor normally did not care about anyone else except for himself. He was a very selfish man who needed Loki's smart intellect to guide him through. Loki knew that deep in his heart, he loved his brother and his brother always meant well, but Loki still detested him. Loki wanted his power, his influence, and Odin was never going to give it to him. Loki never understood why, and instead of protesting, he acted like the dutiful, loving son and brother.
He watched Sigyn as she bent down to grab the ladder from under his bed. Right after she left, he had gone to his father and demanded a ladder be placed in his quarters for her. Odin thought it was outlandish that Loki wanted to make her chores less of a burden, but he could not ignore the sincerity in his eyes. For the first time in a while, Odin was pleased that Loki was taking such an interest in the life of someone less fortunate. Both of his children spent too much time for themselves, and this was a nice change. Now Odin only wondered if Thor could do the same.
"Would you like some help?" Loki gazed upward at her, and she gazed back down at him. "I can hold onto that ladder if you would like."
"You ask me every time I step on this ladder," she bravely replied, "and every time I give you the same answer. I am fine, Loki."
"Okay, okay," he chuckled. "Just watch your mouth, will you? If anyone heard you talking to me like that..." He really did not want Thor or Odin to pass by the hallway, accidently catching her utter those words. If they did, then she would be gone, and everything that he worked for would be wasted. Loki enjoyed their moments together, even though she spent the entire time cleaning his quarters. He did not really have any other friends in the palace besides Thor, and he only considered him as a brother and nothing more. When they were little they were best friends, but as they grew older, Loki became more quiet in his actions, and Thor easily lost interest. He had a feeling that she had known that all long, that she had observed them long enough to know.
"I did not know you cared," she joked, climbing down the ladder.
"If you leave then my room is going to be a complete mess," he defended. "It has never been cleaner, I swear."
"I thought the other servant did a great job in your room," she said in confusion.
Loki snorted. "He was terrible. I am surprised my room has lasted for this long. Sometimes I had to clean up right after he left me so Odin would not notice."
She opened her mouth to respond, but no words came out. Loki figured that she must have known her place not speak ill of her dead colleague. Loki was not at the least a bit shamed by his comments. Sigyn was such a better servant, and she was so beautiful. He just loved watching her work, even if she did not do a great job some days. He always concluded that she was tired and that something was bothering her on those days. There was nothing that Loki desired more than to ask her what was troubling her. For some reason, he wanted to help her. In all his years of life and mischief, he never wanted to do that before. There was undoubtably something special about her.
