(a/n: This is a Songfic! based on Trisha Yearwood's "She's in Love with the Boy")
Katie's sittin' on her old front porch
Watchin' the chickens peck the ground
There ain't a whole lot goin' on tonight
In this one horse town
Over yonder comin' up the road
In a beat up Chevy truck
Her boyfriend Tommy is laying on the horn
Splashing through the mud and the muckHer daddy say's he ain't worth a lick
When it comes to brains
He got the short end of the stick
But Katie's young and man she just don't care
She'd follow Tommy anywhere
She's in love with the boy
She's in love with the boy
She's in love with the boy
And even if they have to run away
She's gonna marry that boy somedayYou were washing dishes when you heard the truck. You smiled when you recognized it as your daughter's boyfriend. You didn't have a problem with the boy, but your husband Clint certainly did. "Have fun, but remember the rules," you called out to your daughter just before Clint came into the room.
"Where is she going?" Clint asked, glancing out the window. When he saw the young man's truck, he clenched his fists and moved to follow the two teens. "Clint, let it alone," you said softly, knowing he could still hear you. "I don't like that boy. He's not good enough for her. And she's too young to date anyway." You rolled your eyes and went back to washing your dishes. "She's older than I was when we started dating, babe." Clint didn't have anything to say about that, so after he kissed your cheek, he left the room.
Katie and Tommy at the drive in movie
Parked in the very last row
They're too busy holding on to one another
To even care about the show
Later on outside the Tasty Freeze
Tommy slips something on her hand
He says my high school ring will have to do
'Till I can buy a wedding bandHer daddy say's he ain't worth a lick
When it comes to brains
He got the short end of the stick
But Katie's young and man she just don't care
She'd follow Tommy anywhere
She's in love with the boy
She's in love with the boy
She's in love with the boy
And even if they have to run away
She's gonna marry that boy somedayYour daughter sat at the old drive-in with her boyfriend, his hand clasped in hers. The two hadn't been together long, but she really cared for him. She loved him. "Hey, you want to go to the diner?" her boyfriend asked when the movie finished and she grinned. In the back of her mind, she could hear her father telling her that the boy wasn't good enough for her. But, in the same thought, she heard your voice telling her that she was old enough to make her own choices.
Before walking into the diner, your daughter felt her boyfriend gently tugging her hand. She looked up at him with a smile before she felt something cool being slipped onto her finger. Glancing down, she saw his class ring on her finger. "I know it's not a proper engagement ring, but it'll have to do for a while. If you're willing to stay with me anyway." She threw her arms around him and hugged him close.
Her Daddy's waitin up 'till half past twelve
When they come sneakin' up the walk
He says young lady get on up to your room
While me and junior have a talk
Momma breaks in says don't lose your temper
It wasn't very long ago
You yourself was just a hay seed plow boy
Who didn't have a row to hoeMy daddy said you wasn't worth a lick
When it came to brains you got the short of the stick
But he was wrong and honey you are too
Katie looks at Tommy like I still look at you
She's in love with the boy
She's in love with the boy
She's in love with the boy
What's meant to be will always find a way
She's in love with the boy
She's in love with the boy
She's in love with the boy
What's meant to be will always find a way
She's gonna marry that boy someday"Where are they? She was supposed to be back an hour ago..." Clint mumbled and you shook your head fondly. "Clint, I'm sure she's fine." He frowned but soon heard the car door. "There she is." You put your book down and waited. You were going to be there to intervene if necessary. Your husband didn't have a quick temper, but when it came to his daughter, Clint didn't play around. That was his baby and no one was going to hurt her on his watch.
The two teens opened the front door as quietly as possible, only to be confronted by an irritated Clint. Your daughter's boyfriend's eyes went wide with fear and Clint's with rage when he saw the ring on his daughter's finger. "Go to your room. Junior and I need to have a talk." Your daughter was as stubborn as Clint was and refused to move. You could see your husband getting more and more angry as the seconds ticked by.
"Clint...calm down." He turned to you with his mouth agape. "Calm down? This kid thinks he's good enough for my daughter, but he can't even get her home by curfew and when he does bring her home, she's got a ring on her finger!" Your daughter blushed and you glanced at her. "We will talk about that later, young lady," you told her before looking back at Clint.
"Clint, try and remember what it was like when we were that age. My dad said the same things about you. He didn't think you were good enough and was adamant that we would never be together." Clint's fists unclenched and the red began clearing from his face. "What did we do, Clint?" Your husband sighed and answered, "We eloped. Haven't really talked to your dad since." You nodded. "Do you really want our daughter to feel like she has to do the same?" Sighing, Clint's shoulders sagged a bit and he looked back at the teenagers.
"Fine. You're right. I'm sorry." He stood up straight and offered your daughter's boyfriend a hand. "Just...keep her happy. Protect her, love her and cherish her." The young man nodded eagerly. "Of course, sir. Thank you." Clint let go of his hand and your daughter ran over and hugged him tightly. "Thank you, Daddy." Clint kissed her forehead and whispered something to her that you couldn't hear.
After your daughter went to bed and her boyfriend left, you wrapped your arms around Clint's waist from behind and kissed between his shoulder blades. "Thank you, baby." He gave your arms a gentle squeeze then turned to face you. He kissed you and you hummed in content. When you parted, you smiled at him. "She'll be fine. And so will you." Clint nodded and kissed your forehead.
