Chapter 2
My cellphone rang and woke me up in an instant. The caller ID flashing Bree’s name. I picked it up.
“Hello! What happened to you? I called at your house cos I thought maybe you’re sick,” she said in a panicked voice. “But you’re not picking it up so I called here. Where are you?”
“Hey, Bree! I’m alright, just calm down,” I said in a calm voice. “Look, I’ll call you later because I’ve gotta check on something. I promise.”
“Sure, but in case you forget,” she continued. “I’ll bug you forever and ever! Chow!” Then, she clicked off her phone, giving me a busy line. It’s suppose to be me who’s doing that. Not her. Before I put my cellphone inside my pocket, I realized that I’ve been sleeping for the past few hours. It’s already four in the afternoon.
Rising from my chair, something caught my eye in the coffee table. A muffin basket is placed. Someone has been here already. Probably, it’s the lady from the phone. Slowly approaching Mr. Gates’s bed, I took his wrinkled hand.
“Are you alright now, Sir?” I begin. “I’ve called your house and I’m sorry that I looked at your wallet and got two identification cards. It’s the only way I could call your family anyway. I’m sorry, but don’t worry, I’ll return it to you now.” I let go off his hand and returned the cards into his wallet.
Suddenly, the door creaked open, and I was startled. A lady appeared. She’s a few inches shorter than me, short brown and gray hair, and her face looks tired and stressed. She saw me and I could tell she’s not that surprised to see me. Maybe it’s because she recognizes me as the girl who called in their house.
“Hi there, my name’s Porscha Till. I’m the guardian of Mr. Gates!” she introduced herself. “Thanks for the call earlier! How can I repay you for your kindness?”
“Nice to meet you, Porscha. My name’s Carther, Carther Swift,” I said sweetly as I can. “No, it’s no big deal, really! You don’t have to!”“Actually, I want to tell you that because of this old man I broke my record of being the Perfect Attendance Student Award!”I thought.
“Why dear, don’t you have school to attend to today?” she asked, concerned.
“Umm…actually, yes!” I say shyly. It’s like she heard my thoughts. “But, it’s alright. It’s only for a day.”
“You’re really a nice young lady! I thank you for your kindness!”
I just chuckle. “So, are you the one who brought the muffin basket?”
“Oh, that?” she pointed it.
“Duh?”I thought. “Yea, since I didn’t have enough money to buy him these kinds of snacks.”
“Oh no, Kent bought that. He’s the grandson of Mr. Gates.”
“Wait, did you mean Kent Gates?”
“Yes, do you know him?”
“Well, you see, he goes to our school. He’s been popular these days because of him,” I pointed at Mr. Gates. Porscha followed my hand’s direction. Now that I’ve realized it, he’s THE Mr. Gates our school has been gossiping about since the time Kent has been transferred in our school. Bree was the only who’s updating me about it. She’d even told me girls even want to be in a relationship with this guy because he’s rich and handsome. I never really paid any attention to it. So this is the reason why almost all of the girls in our school go gaga over him.
