Chapter One
Adriel scanned the crowd of demons, searching for Caym. He had promised her just that morning that he would meet her at the entrance of the Great Hall, yet here she stood. Alone. Her eyes flickered from corner to corner, observing the activity of the other graduates. Many of her soon-to-be ex-classmates were chattering on about their future assignments, but she honestly hadn't thought twice about it. She only had one thought in her mind: Earth.
Visions of vibrant colors and tall building flooded her mind. She had dreamt of this day for eighteen years. Now it was time, and she was truly in awe. Today was the day she would graduate from Shaytaan Academy; The day that she would be assigned both a human to occupy on Earth and her life mate.
"Addie! Addie!" She heard her name being called from across the busy crowd. Her enhanced, light green eyes focused, searching for the source of the sound. It only took a moment before she saw her best friend shoving his way towards her. She couldn't help but grin. But when he finally reached her, she hid her amusement and sent him an icy glare.
"You're late." Her words were sharp, but only made him grin wider. She could never resist that adorable, fanged smile of his. She also could never understand how her best friend since infancy turned into the hottest demon at Shaytann Academy. He was tall, probably six inches taller than Adriel. His rich, dark red skin was flawless, practically glowing under his leather vest. Today, he had taken the time to brush his dark, midnight hair that was usually kept in a braid. It was now hanging loose down to his shoulders, his small horns showing just above his forehead. His most beautiful trait, in Adriel's opinion, was his eyes. No other demon in their class had eyes as blue as Caym's.
"You should paint a portrait of me." Caym said abruptly, his smile fading away. The statement surprised Adriel.
"Why would I want to do that?" She asked, crossing her arms and cocking her hip. Her long, slender tail flipped behind her, showing her annoyance. Caym never failed to push her buttons. To others, Adriel was tough, almost hardened. But to Caym? She was easy to mess with, and that infuriated her.
"Well, I figured if you had a portrait of me, you could stare at it later... Ya know, instead of now." He said with a wink. Adriel rolled her eyes at him, trying to hide her embarrassment. She sometimes forgot just how beautiful Caym was.
"Very funny, Caym. Very funny." Her voice was thick with sarcasm, only serving to amuse him more.
"Come on, Addie. You know you can't resist me much longer." He laughed as she scoffed at his assumption. "I've been resisting you for eighteen years, Caym. Soon, you"ll have a mate and you won't be worried about charming me anymore."
At that very moment, Adriel saw the playfulness leave Caym's eyes for the first time. But before she could say anything, the ancient gong rang throughout the hall, drowning out all other sounds. All conversations vanished, allowing everyone to give their full attention to the headmaster,Valafar, who was about to begin the ceremony.
Adriel wrinkled her nose at the site of the gray haired demon that stood on a platform at the other end of the hall. She had suffered many punishments in her days at the academy, all because of him. No matter the offense, big or small, he was always the first to crack the whip on his students. She would be surprised if there was a single demon in this hall that didn't loathe every fiber of his being.
"Welcome my fellow demons. Today, we bring forth a new generation! A generation of fine demons. Demons who have worked their whole lives in order to serve our Lord, Lucifer. Today, each and every one of them will be assigned both a human to occupy while on earth and a life mate. Which shall we begin with hmm?" His voiced boomed throughout the hall, pausing in order to let the graduates decide.
