Chapter Sixteen

I knelt over the extinguished candles, gathering my belongings in the crisply burnt cabin.

The door slowly creaked open, revealing a human Stefan Salvatore.

"Cassidy-" he tried.

"No." I spat, rising from my spot as I looked over to the open door. "There is nothing you can say that will make this okay."

"I understand." Stefan avowed. "But I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I didn't try."

"That's a shame.." I clenched my hands into fists, causing my nails to dig into my palms. "A good human skill is knowing when to shut up."

I slowly waltzed over to the open door, where Stefan closed his eyes, taking in a breath.

"I'm sorry." he apologized. "I'm so sorry-"

"You killed Enzo, Stefan." I acknowledged, furrowing my eyebrows as my eyes watered. "You. Killed. Enzo."

"And I will spend the rest of my human life, living with that guilt. Looking for ways to make up for my actions." Stefan addressed.

My face remained dull.

"I'm leaving town. I know it may not mean much to you right now, but I'm leaving everything I can to make things better around here. For everyone." he concluded.

I nodded, pursing my lips.

"Hm- okay. Safe travels." I whispered, slamming the door in his face.

Letting out a breath, I placed my forehead against the door.

"'Bit harsh, love." Enzo announced, causing me to spin around.

"I didn't know you were here." I avowed.

"Well, when you're in this state, it seems to be quite easy." Enzo croaked, as I took a step closer, wrapping my arms around his torso.

"He's earned it.." I added, nestling my face into his neck for a second before I swiftly pulled back. "I hate him."

My phone began buzzing from my pocket, giving me the time to answer it.

"Cassidy Gilbert's phone. If you'd like a favor, press one. If on some rare occasion you're just calling to say hi, press two." I perked with a mocking tone. "And if you go by the name of Stefan Salvatore, stay the hell out of my life."

"Cass, it's Damon-" Damon spoke up,

"Ah, ah- you heard me. If you want a favor, press one." I barked, taking the phone away from my ear, ready to hang up. "Goodbye, Damon."

"Cassidy, wait! It's Kai." Damon announced, gaining my attention.

I paused, looking down at the phone.

"He took Elena's coffin, and turned her over to Cade." Damon informed.

"That little shithead did what?" I exclaimed, raising my eyebrows as I put the phone back up to my ear.

"Just- get over here as soon as you can, so we can fill you in on the plan, alright?" Damon proposed.

I scoffed, shaking my head. "No- no. I am not helping you and your brother."

"This plan is to save Elena, Cassidy. Your sister." Damon reiterated.

"I don't care, Damon." I bickered, furrowing my eyebrows. "I can get her back on my own time. She'd understand why I'm refusing to help."
