Gravity

Chapter 1

EVA was at the mall with her friends when the first Shift occurred. As Eva, Cameron, Sam and Orion walked down the row of shops, it happened. Eva felt a ticking sensation on her skin as if someone had sprayed insect repellent on her. Her stomach lurched and felt herself falling. She landed on her frontside, using her hands to break her fall.

Eva saw her friends falling to. She watched as Orion slammed straight into the wall, with so much impact that she heard his bones crunching. Sam had fallen onto the glass dome above. She was just sitting there shell-shocked.

It must have been minutes before she knew what had happened. The world was upside down. She had fallen onto the ceiling, Cameron was nowhere to be seen and Sam was on the glass roof of the mall. Chairs had fallen all around Sam from the first floor cafeteria, it was so unlikely that one hadn't hit her that Eva couldn't help but wonder if she had some crazy super power to protect herself. Considering how Mother Earth had decided to throw a curve ball at them and spin herself around, anything was possible, maybe even some X-Men initiation going down.

A little girl had fallen next to her. Her face was bruised and she was crying her eyes out. She crawled on the ceiling, slowly making her way to the girl. On her left, half of a person's body, the top half, was impaled in a metal beam, from god knows where. His face eternally stuck in horror. She felt herself starting to wretch so she averted her eyes.

When she finally reached the girl with the bruised face, she realized what had happened. That torso probably belonged to the girl's father and Eva didn't even want to know what had happened to her mother. Lost in her thoughts of whether her parents were dead, Eva didn't hear the sound of the glass dome cracking.

'Eva! Help!' Eva turned her head glancing up towards the dome ceiling. Sam was lying, trying to keep still as the glass dome fractured, spreading out like webs. On the ground level, 5 floors below or above or... whatever you called it. A chair dislodged from the floor and fell, flying like a comet to the ceiling.

Time seemed to slow down as the chair struck the dome. Eva screamed at the top of her lungs, telling Sam to run. Sam seemed to her hear her because, she pushed herself of the glass and ran. The ceiling seemed to chase her breaking a mili-meter behind where her foot was a second ago. Sam sprinted to the nearest handhold she could find, which was a hose from a janitors closet which had unraveled itself. She grabbed the head of the hose with both hands and jumped up. The glass dome broke, chairs, tables, clothes, food people both dead and alive flew up into the sky. Tumbling into an eternal drop.

The hose jerked, struggling to hold Sam's weight. If Sam or the hose couldn't handle it, she would be a goner. Eva pushed herself up and started running towards Sam. Unfortunately she had to run a whole round to reach the side she was on. On the way she picked up a long piece of rope that had fallen out the hard wear store and wrapped it around her waist. Eva wasn't sure how she was going to pull this off but she had to try.

She tied the rope to a column and pulled as hard she could, making sure it would Sam's and her weight. She looked down to where Sam was. Ok she told herself, I can do this.

She checked the rope one more time and launched herself over the edge. Instantly feeling gravity pull her towards the sky. Then she flew upwards and luckily it was the right length of rope. Sam was hanging next to her. 'Sam! Climb the rope down!' Sam smiled and jumped. She grabbed the rope with her legs and hands and scooted her way back down to the ceiling. 'Ok!' Eva called when she reached the safety of the ceiling. 'Now pull me....' Her word were cut out when the feeling of the mosquito bug spray feeling came again and her stomach lurched, this time to the left.
