*Alex POV*

I was in Washington D.C. with Evangeline. Evangeline was my friend, probably my only friend besides my dog, David. Wow, that's sad. Let's not talk about my friend life. Anyways, back to the point. Evangeline had told me that we were on our way to Long Island, New York to see her family. She had convinced my parents to let me go, not that they would have cared. My dad is a doctor and is never home. My step-mom ignores me and acts like I never existed. She spends all her time fawning over my younger step-brother, Matthew. I don't know what she sees in him, he's always getting in trouble at school but my stem-mom just waves it away and doesn't worry about it.

"Alex, are you alright?" Evangeline asked, tapping my shoulder. I nodded my head, shaking my thoughts off.

"Yeah, I'm great. Never better." I replied, and Evangeline smiled. Evangeline was pretty with long black hair that tumbled down her back in waves. She kept it in a braid most of the time, but today she let it roam free. Evangeline had warm brown eyes that reminded me of melted chocolate. Her skin was a pale white like she hadn't seen the sun for days even though she had, and she usually wore green blouses and white skirts that reached her knees, and she always wore green flats. She was also the only person in this world who understood me. I had a bad case of ADHD, and it didn't help that I was dyslexic too. No one believed me, except Evangeline.

I compared Evangeline's look to my own. She was more girly than I was. I had dirty blonde hair that reached past my shoulders and was usually kept in a ponytail and out of my face. My eyes were a stormy gray color and even though most people say gray isn't a pretty color, it's my favorite color besides blue. My skin had a slight tan with a few freckles decorating my arms. My everyday clothes mainly consisted of t-shirts ad skinny jeans while wearing white converse. I never really bothered to try to look cute like all the 'popular' girls at school did and I disliked wearing make-up though I'd only wear mascara on special occasions. I just did my best at being myself.

"That's good. I hope you won't miss you family too much on our trip?" She asked, and I snorted very loudly. Some fellow pedestrians gave me weird looks before continuing on their way.

"Miss my family? Never. Do they miss me? Nope, they already forget that I live in the same house as them." I said, sounding bitter. But then I wiped the angry expression off my face and put on a cheery smile. It wasn't right to take my anger out on my best friend.

"I'm very eager to meet your family, though." I told her, which made her face brighten a little bit.

"Well I'm s-" She was cut off by the sound of something crashing behind us. I turned quickly to see a man pointing at me. There was a broken vase on the sidewalk next to him, which explained the crashing noise. I glanced around and then back at the man, me? I mouthed as I pointed to myself. He nodded his head and began walking towards us. Evangeline's eye grew fearful and she took off running. I turned and was right on her heels.

As we were running, we passed two girls. One of them looked like Evangeline, and the other looked to be my age. I heard the girl my age call out, "Hey, you! Can I ask you something?" as we ran past. I tapped Evangeline on the shoulder and she stopped running to face me. I told her about the two girls and her eyes widened when I told her that one of them looked like her. We checked to see if that man was still following us, but thankfully he wasn't. I led Evangeline over to where the two girls had been. They were still there. When Evangeline saw the girl that looked like her, she raced to her and they hugged each other. I'm guessing they know each other? They might be sisters or something. I looked at the other girl. She was about 5'2 to my 5'3 with pale skin and blue eyes. Her hair was dyed the colors of the rainbow which I found unique. I'd never seen someone with rainbow hair before. I held out my hand to her.

"Hi. My name is Alex Spencer. You are?" I asked. The girl looked at me and then at my hand. She finally took it and we shook.

  "Phoenix Tate."

"Nice to meet you, Phoenix."

"Same to you, Alex."

I grinned at her and looked over at Evangeline and the other girl. Evangeline caught my eye and smiled wide.

"This is my sister, Luck." She said, introducing the other girl too me. I smiled and shook her hand also. Luck looked the same as her sister except she wore a white blouse, green skirt, and white flats. Her black hair was in a braid that laid across her shoulder, looking tame compared to her sisters messy, windblown hair.

"Lovely to meet you, Alex." She said, giving me a toothy smile. Her voice even sounded the same as Evangeline! I smiled back and nodded my head.

"You know, actually we're going to the same place. We could travel together." Evangeline offered and everyone nodded their heads in agreement. We climbed into the car that Luck and Phoenix had been driving in. Phoenix and I sat in the back while the two sisters sat in the front.

"Where are you from?" I asked, looking over at Phoenix.

"Nashville, Tennessee. You?"

"Washington, D.C. I live here."

"Oh. So what's your story?"

"Well, um..." I said, scratching the back of my neck. "I never knew my mom. My dad's a doctor so I hardly ever see him. I have a step-mom and a younger step-brother, but they could really care less about me. I'm an outcast at school and Evangeline is my only friend. Oh, I'm also ADHD and Dyslexic. Though most people say I'm lying about not being able to read English. That's about it. There's really nothing special about me."

"I can relate. I never knew my mom either. My dad doesn't like to talk about her. I have a twin brother named Peter and he gets the spotlight all the time and he only pretends like he cares for me. I've always been an outcast too at school. I can do anything I like and get away with it for a few minutes before I'm caught. Luck was my only friend at school."

"Was?"

"Yeah. She's not my only friend anymore, you are too."

"I'm glad that I'm your friend, Phoenix."

"I'm glad that you're my friend too, Alex."

"You know, my real name isn't actually Alex. It's Alexandra, but I like to go by Alex for short."

"I think Alex suits you more than Alexandra."

"Thanks."

"Just stating my opinion."

I smiled as I stared out the window to watch the scenery pass by in a blur as the car picked up speed. I'm glad that I made a new friend today.
