Chapter 5

Two months had passed since the Battle of Fairy Tail and Laxus's subsequent expulsion. 

It had taken some time, but (F/n) had been able to get over the pain of his cousin's banishment. Having Erza at his side helped as well. 

At this time, (F/n) was seated at the bar next to Gajeel. The two had become surprisingly close friends. They turned out to have quite a bit in common. Most of the other wizards, though, just thought it was strange to see Gajeel comfortable enough with someone to joke and laugh. 

"So how are things with you and Levy?" (F/n) asked, stifling his laugh with his beverage. 

"I don't know what you're talking about," Gajeel grumbled in annoyance.

(F/n) chuckled. "Come on, Gajeel!" he teased. "You should loosen up! Find yourself a girl while you're young!"

"You know I don't have time for any of the mushy garbage," Gajeel muttered. His face was solemn. "Besides, any girl would be better off without me."

(F/n) let out a sigh. Out of all the wizards in the guild, (F/n) was the only person that Gajeel entrusted with his inner strife. 

(F/n) stood up and placed a hand on Gajeel's shoulder. "Well," he said quietly. "You'll never know till you try. I already know Levy is willing, so why don't you give yourself a chance."

Gajeel didn't respond, but he didn't really have to. (F/n) then ventured through the guild to find where Erza had wandered off to.

The next day was the announcement for the S-Class Promotion Trial. 

The whole guild was gathered in anticipation as the stage curtain raised to reveal Gildarts, Mirajane, Erza, and (F/n).

Master Makarov selected the eight contenders for the promotion. 

"Natsu Dragneel! Gray Fullbuster! Juvia Lockser! Elfman Strauss! Cana Alberona! Freed Justine! Levy McGarden! and Mest Gryder!"

A mix of cheers and complaints erupted from the crowd. It was inevitable. Only eight wizards were chosen every year, so ultimately there would always be someone disappointed. 

The Master then explained that the Trial would take place in one week on Tenrou Island.

Those on the stage then began to explain the rules of the trial.

Mira started. "The eight participants will each choose a partner. This person will also be allowed to train with them during the week leading up to the event."

"Observe these two rules when choosing your partner," Erza instructed. "Number 1 - they must be a member of Fairy Tail, and Number 2 - your choice cannot be an S-Class wizard."
