If you've got a bug phobia, or a phobia to that thing up there, this chapter is not for you. Enjoy and beware.
"I'm not sure why I'm here," he admits.
"You haven't talked to me in forever."
"Hey."
I try to ignore the little girl in the corner of my eye.
"I know. And I'm sorry."
"For what? For abandoning me? For taking pictures of me on a date with someone else? For-for practically threatening to kill yourself because I wouldn't feel the same?"
He looks at his knees. "No. I'm sorry for falling in love with you."
"Oh cut the bullshit." I almost laughed. It was funny hearing a child swear. "This motherfucker left you alone to fend for yourself while that big behemoth in a letterman jacket tried to have sex with you. Don't forget that."
He shifts in the chair he's sitting in. "I heard from your mom that you tried to kill yourself and you were in the hospital so I thought it was some sort of unwritten rule that I should visit you."
"Why? I don't need another person coming in here and telling me I'm crazy."
"Which you are. Bitch, nobody can fucking see me, but you. You had an hallucination about me cutting your arm. See, watch this."
She punches him in the face. I can hear the sound of her fist connecting with his skin, but as she pulls away, he doesn't flinch. He sits still looking at me like I'm a child.
"You're imagining homicidal little girls with red hair and you don't want to be called crazy? You think you're sane? You're a fucking worthless imbecile. You will never find your panacea. And you will never be normal."
"Shut up, Ophelia," I mumble.
"Who?" he asks, glancing around the room.
"Nothing."
"Well, I never said you were crazy. I just wanted to see you. Nellie and Michael are playing in the cafeteria and I've missed it. I've missed us."
"You mean, you miss fantasizing about your best friend that's in love with someone else who doesn't even love her."
"He does love me, you inconsiderate and selfish little brat!"
"No he doesn't, you dumb cunt. Pity and love are two different things."
"Leave me alone, Ophelia! I never wanted you back here in the first place, so why'd you come!?"
"To fuck shit up. Look at lover-boy. He thinks you're crazy. Haha."
Nick is looking at me with wide eyes. "Who are you talking to?"
I ignored his question. "Why'd you come back? Don't say that unwritten rule bullshit. Tell me straight-up."
"I'm still in love with you."
"PAH! He's a liar. You should've killed his crybaby ass when you had the chance. Nobody would believe that an 8-year old had the capability to push someone into a lake. 'Oh no! I didn't know he couldn't swim!'"
She mimicked someone drowning while laughing.
"You don't love me back, but I'd do anything to make you happy," he continues.
"You know what would make me happy? If you'd finally end it all."
Somehow, Ophelia's words came out of my mouth. We sat there, shocked.
