There were butterflies filling my stomach, the kind that flutter and tickle a little too roughly. I had Spanish first period and Ashley, the nice girl that sat next to me at dinner, was in my class. We walked together and she made a lot of jokes that must have been really funny because she was laughing crazily. Of course most of it did not make sense to me, but I laughed anyways. We arrived in the classroom and we took seats next to each other, she was explaining how to paint strawberries on your fingernails, when the teacher who looked like she was in her early 40's, she cleared her throat.
"Hola, clase." Her voice was thin and high, she started relaying class rules, switching from Spanish to English. She was hard to understand, and I wished Leo could be there to translate for me, and you want him to be here so you can stare and joke with him. There was that stupid voice again, I rolled my eyes at it and wondered if it understood.
"Okay clase, everyone is going to stand up, say their name, and something about themselves." She pointed to the boy closest to her, "You start, mijo." It went around the class and I learned their names and odd things about them. When it came to Ashley, she stood and talked about how she does her nails. It was my turn next and I stood nervously.
"I am Calypso, and I really like gardening?" The teacher nodded and I sat down sighing in relief. The rest of the class went along without a hitch, and so did the next. Chris was in my second period English class. Then my biology class came and went without a problem. Fourth period came around and I found Leo sitting in a desk near the back of the class.
"Hello, hot stuff." I whispered in his ear, he jumped and whirled around, all I could do was laugh.
"Oh hey, sunshine," His voice had a weird sound but I found it extremely attractive "How has your day been?"
"It's been good." I smiled and sat next to him, "I've never been very good at math." I whispered.
"That's okay, I'll help." He whispered back. I could feel his hot breath against my skin and could just imagine how hot his flesh must be. The teacher was a thin woman who had lived in Texas. She had a monotone voice and an accent. After introducing herself she launched right into math concepts. Most of which I did not get because all I could think of was the heat radiating from Leo's body. I knew he would be able to understand everything she was saying, but he wasn't paying attention, his eyes were on the paper he had in front of himself. He was drawing what looked like a female version of Festus. His foot was tapping in what seemed like a wild rhythm.
"What are you drawing?" I asked, my voice low.
"A girlfriend for Festus," then even quieter he added "Everyone deserves someone to love." He shook his head and looked back at the paper. The rest of the class went quickly. When the bell rang we stood and Leo asked what I had next period.
"Greek.. mythology?" The word mythology rang around my head. I was a myth, or at least technically, to mortals I was. I wondered if we would learn about me.
"Me too," Leo looked at me, I knew he could tell that I was nervous about it. "Don't worry, sunshine, I'll be with you, and besides everything is blown out of proportion and they don't know half of what really happened." He grinned at me, it was wide and perfect and crooked. I smiled back.
"What will they say about me?"
"I don't know, but I'll only believe what you tell me is true." He grabbed my hand and squeezed, I was grateful for the gesture. We were staring at each other, his eyes had always done something to me, they were so caring and so full of sorrow, it was impossible not to fall in love with them. Why don't you kiss him? The voice asked You've done it before. I ignored it.
