Calypso kissed me. It was the fifth time, she had done it. Her lips were warm and soft, and moved against mine in a perfect rhythm. I grabbed her face in my hands as her arms wrapped around my neck. Electricity shot through my entire body, it felt hot and good. I could feel her fingers pull against the knots at the bottom of my hair. She smelled like cinnamon and vanilla. The only thought in my head was this is the best kiss ever . I could feel her smiling as she leaned into me. Her hands began running up and down my back, I shivered even though my insides were full of a hot electricity. This time was different from all the others, because before they were always quick and awkward, but this felt so right. Without even realizing it I had pulled her closer, and she stopped.
"You are so hot." she panted. I was out of breath too and shocked, it took a minute to realize she meant my skin was hot not me. I looked down at my arm and recognized the familiar tingle of catching on fire.
"Right of course." I willed the oncoming flames down. "I'm gonna go." I said pointing to the door. I stood awkwardly Calypso was still cross-legged on the bed. "I'll see you tomorrow, its a big day. Your first day of school." I was nervous.
"Sorry, Leo I should not have done that." She looked at the sheets under her and picked at something near her foot.
"Its fine, sunshine," I smiled, "It didn't happen." I winked and shut the door. All my energy drained, I felt like I had just run a marathon. I trudged back to my room. When I got into my room I slumped onto my bed. Chris was on the computer but stopped to look at me.
"Whats up man?" he asked. "You look like you saw a ghost." I shook my head.
"It's nothing." I waved him off. "I'm gonna take a shower." I stood up slowly. Chris might have said something but I didn't notice. I could still feel the tingling on my lips and the electricity in the pit of my stomach. I heard Chris say my name or maybe burrito, I couldn't tell. I turned the water on until it was scalding. I let my skin catch fire and stood in the stream of water. As I stood in the water, I tried to picture all of the things I wanted to build for robotics, but couldn't focus because all my plans somehow turned into Calypso's face or lips or skin. I washed my body slowly and didn't notice how long I spent in there until the water started to turn cold. I turned it off and stepped out and dried off. I brushed my teeth and put my pajamas on. Calypso had sown them for me, fire print pants and an orange t-shirt. She had fireproofed them for me after I had told I've accidentally caught on fire in my sleep before.I stepped out of the bathroom and saw Chris sitting on his bed with a magazine in his hands his hair was wet.
"Took you, long enough." he remarked without looking up, "I took a shower at my friend's."
"Oh, sorry." I laid down on my bed and stared at the ceiling. The ceiling had small black dots all over its white surface. Calypso had made a dress like that for Clarisse.
"Are you excited for school tomorrow?" Chris had set the magazine down and he looked at me.
"I guess."
"I am. It's good to be back at school." he paused for a minute. "I didn't know I would get a room mate this year."
"Oh."
"It's kind of cool, and it's really good that you introduced me to Calypso." I could hear his smile when he said her name. "My friend, Kailee, is having a party this weekend. You can come with me and Calypso."
"Okay, maybe I'll go. Goodnight."
"Goodnight." I laid in my bed trying to fall asleep, but every time I almost fell asleep Calypso bombarded my thoughts. I wondered if we had any classes together when I realized we hadn't exchanged schedules. I had English, Spanish, chemistry, algebra 2, Greek mythology, and then after lunch P.E, and a basic engineering class. I wondered if we would learn about Calypso in the Greek class. I pulled a few things out of the jacket hanging on the side of my bed and messed with them. My feet were tapping against the sheets of my bed. I nodded off when I was holding a completed and galloping gazelle, foot still tapping.
"Leo! Wake up!"A pillow was launched at my face and I hopped up. "Dude, breakfast is in 30." I had thought at first that I was still aboard the Argo 2 waking up to one of the countless threats we had faced, but when I saw Chris's face I felt my bones become less tense. I slumped back down, and groaned. My fears for school flooded back into my mind. I sat up and grabbed at the suitcase I had neglected to unpack. I pulled a few things out and headed toward the bathroom. I got ready quickly and when I stepped out of the bathroom, Chris was doing something on his cell phone. I walked to my bed and started to wrap my tool belt around my hips. "Why are you putting that on?" Chris raised his eyebrow.
"Oh, um, I," I stammered "I forgot?" Chris shook his head and looked back at his phone. "I'm ready." I looked at him.
"Okay, we'll stop and get Calypso, and then at breakfast you can hang out with those kids you hung out with at dinner." He gave me a look that pretty much said 'Try not to be seen with me. I don't want you to taint my coolness.'
"Right."I followed him out the door. The bell rang overhead and I could picture Calypso screaming through her perfect lips. Chris knocked and Calypso opened it, her hair was braided to the side and she was wearing a white shirt and jeans. She didn't have any make-up on but it just made her look natural and perfect. I grinned at her and she smiled back.
"Hi," her voice was small. "I need to talk to Leo a second," Chris just looked at her. "Alone." she smiled and dragged me into her room. "You did not tell Chris, right?"
"About what?" She rolled her eyes.
"Do not act dumb, Leo Valdez."
"Okay sorry," I shook my head. "No." She sighed.
"I think, I might really like him," the words stung "Please do not mess this up for me." Her voice sounded strained like she didn't want to say it, but I figured I was just hearing things because my heart was burning.
"Alright, Sunshine. I'll try not to mess this up." I smirked at her, she rolled her eyes again but this time it was playful. Calypso walked with Chris and I fell behind them. When I got to the dining hall most of the kids were there and Calypso was sitting at the same table as Chris and all the other cool kids. I made my way over to the kids I had sat with at dinner. There were four of them, Daniel, Noah, Jensen, and Yvonne. They were nice enough but I couldn't wait for Piper and Jason and the others to get here. When I sat down with them made small talk mostly about machines and the mechanical working of things.
"Alright," Daniel banged his fist against the table. "If you want to be part of the robotics team you need to prove yourself."
"Daniel," Yvonne's voice was commanding. "He doesn't need to prove himself, we need members."
"Okay, just show us what you can do." Daniel said, his voice was lacking the confidence it just had, I assumed he was used to taking orders from Yvonne.
"Uh, sure." I pulled a few things from the pockets of my jackets. I assembled them the same why I had the night before but made it a little different. In a few minutes I had a satyr prancing around the table waving his fist. I laughed because I could see all the similarities to coach Hedge. When I looked up, my friends mouths were agape.
"You are definitely on the team." Noah commented, his thick lisp making it hard to understand. Dr. Hensley stood on his miniature stage and tried to quiet everyone down. He began to rattle on about class switches and sports tryouts. I was pretty uninterested and just watched the goddess sitting 7 tables away from me. She looked very focused, she was straining her eyes and leaning towards the speaker.
“Let's eat breakfast!” Everyone in the dining hall stood and headed for the food at the front. I grabbed an apple and a peach flavored yogurt. When the group I was sitting with gathered back around the table, they talked about plans for a robot they planned to build. Jensen told me they had won state champions the year before, and wanted to go on to nationals. The conversation was easy and light, it reminded me of cabin 9's table back at camp. We exchanged schedules and I was glad that I had first period with Daniel.
“I'm not very good at English.” I remarked.
“Me either, math is my thing.” he replied and I nodded. Dr. Hensley took his stage again.
“Alright Kids, good luck today, and I hope this is the best year ever at Conrad Prep!” Everyone cheered and the bell rang.
Okay I'm sorry it took so long to update. For some reason this was hard to write, I don't know why. Anyways these characters belong to Rick, and tell me what you think!
