Chapter 16

He fell to the ground. My heart was pounding in my chest. He jumped back up to his feet and flew in with a punch. I couldn't see who was fighting as all the lads were scrambling around, trying to pull the two lads off eachother.

Aaron sprinted down to try and help the situation. In my head I knew who was fighting but I hoped I was wrong. My heart was beating faster and faster and like the Olly Murs song, my heart was skipping a beat.

I couldn't believe what I was seeing infront of my eyes. Two of my mates were fighting but I didn't know who they were.

I sprung up from the blanket and fumbled for my crutches. I made my way to the chaos as quickly and as safely as I could. I tried to push my way between the two lads.

Punches were flying in and the lads couldn't stop them.

"FINNLEY!" I screamed "Stop it!" his head spun to my direction.

He looked angry. I looked at his hand, it was splattered with blood. I turned around. It was Darryl. His nose was bloody and his eyes were red and swollen.

“Are you alright Darryl?”

“Yeah I’m fine Rox.” he answered in a distant but angered tone. He looked uneasy on his feet so I stood by him to support him.

“Why’d you do it Finnley? What were you thinking?”

“I just… he said…”

“You know I don’t want to hear anymore of your excuses Finnley. Come on Darryl lets clean you up.” his hand was draped over my shoulder to keep him balanced.

Once back at the picnic spot, I helped him to the ground. Everyone was starting to crowd around him to make sure he was ok, but Aaron kept them back. I could hear him explaining to Calvin how he didn’t like fuss.

o    I grabbed the wet wipes and found some tissues.

“Hold that there will you Darryl. What happened?” he did as I asked him but he hung his head in shame. I turned around to the others and mouthed if they could leave for a while so I could try and talk to Darryl.

“They’ve all gone now. So are you going to tell me what happened?” I cupped his chin to raise his head.

“It was nothing.”

“It didn’t look like nothing.” I pulled a wipe out of the packet and started to clean his face. He just sat there in silence. I pulled his hand away from his nose. At least he’d stopped bleeding I thought to myself.

He pushed his hand through his hair and finally looked me in the eyes. “I’m sorry” he whispered.

“What for? It’s not your fault. He threw the first punch.”

“Yeah but I shouldn’t have retaliated the way I did.” he looked defenceless.

“I don’t blame Darryl.” he looked down at his feet. “Why did he punch you?” he looked up staring me straight in the eyes.

“Because of you.” I was puzzled “He said he’d seen us talking this morning by the gate and accused us of a secret affair. I denied it of course and I told him that you could see whoever you wanted to.” I was seething. How could Finnley accuse us of that? I managed to force a smile. Darryl pause, thinking whether he should tell me the rest, “He said that no-one would ever have a chance with you. So I asked him what happened if I got with you and that’s when he hit me.”

“Oh Darryl I’m so sorry. Finnley just can’t get over it and move on.”

“have you two got history then?” I explained to him everything that had happened between us. Darryl was so easy to talk to. I could open up to him about everything.

The others started to arrive back.

“Is everything ok?” Nicola asked. Darryl nodded clearly not wanting to talk about it to the others. We didn’t talk about it again, we just sat there in the glorious sun discussing what we were going to do that evening.

“Joey’s having a gathering, he said we could go along as long as we bring some drink.” Rochelle mentioned. Joey often had parties at his, it was almost every weekend. I was hesitant. I mean his last party was fun but what had just happened I couldn’t deal with Finnley.

“I’m up for it. Never been on a two day drinking binge not that I drink much anyway.” Michelle stated with a giggle.

“C’mon Roxy. It will be fun. You can let your hair down again like you did last night.” Aaron chuckled. I looked around at the others. I could see that they wanted me to go. I turned to Darryl.

“It’s your decision Rox.” My head was telling me I deserved to have some fun but my heart told me it would be a bad mistake.

“Ok why not. It can’t get any worse.”

We packed away the picnic and headed back to Rochelle’s. we made a list of all the alcohol we would get. I said Joey should pay on his card, seen as he was the only one who was 18, and we would work out how much everyone owed him later. Dwayne went along with him to get some for the lads as well.

I got my iPod out of my bag and decided to put together an album of music specially for the party. I added LMFAO, Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, Adele, We Are The In Crowd (who were my favourite band), One Direction and a load of songs that were on the NOW albums.

“Have you got Prodigy on there?” asked Darryl.

“I have Omen and that’s it. I do have some other songs like that though.” the album was complete ready for the party to start.

I didn’t want to wear my dress anymore so Becca drove us up to her’s so I could get my stuff. I pulled out my trackies and a strapless top.

“What are you wearing?” Becca questioned.

“Urm… my swimsuit. Why?”

“I just meant… trackies?”

“They’re comfy.”

“Here, put this on.” she flung a black knee-length skirt at me.

“Really?”

“Yeah you’ll look gorgeous in it. Wear your shoes from last night. I’ll do your hair and make-up. Go put them on and I’ll put the curlers and straigtheners on to heat up.” I slipped into the skirt and zipped it up at the back. I have to say it looked really good and went well with the top.

I walked back into Becca’s room and I sat down at her desk. She had just finished straightening her hair and had put her extensions in. she straightened my fringe and parted it to the side. She brushed through my hair and put the top half in a pony tail, curling the rest of my hair loosely. Becca picked up an accessory off her desk and placed it in my hair. It was a turquoise flower that matched my top. She quickly put mascara and eye-shadow on me and we were ready to head back.

I chucked my bag in her car so I didn’t have to go back up later to fetch it. ‘Oh My Goodness’ by Olly Murs came on the radio.

“I love this song” Becca said whilst turning it up “Have you put this on the album for tonight?”

“No I haven’t thought the lads wouldn’t like it. Why?”

“Put it on. It will give the lads a message.” she sensed I was confused by what she had just said “I know Finnley likes you and it will tell him to not give up and grow up. But it will also tell someone else to buck up.” I was about to ask her what she meant when my phone rang.

“Hey Roxy where are you two?”

“S’mae ffrind gyrru. We’re just by the roundabout we’ll be back in a min>“

“Ok the lads are back but we said we’d go over in about an hour.”

“Ok Stace see you in a bit.”

“What does ffrind gyrru mean?” asked Becca.

“Oh it means driving friend coz me and Stace are learning at the same time.”

We arrived back at Rochelle’s and jumped (or in my case hopped) out the car.

“Wow Rox” Nicola said as I walked through the door “someone’s dressing to impress.”

“It wasn’t my idea it was Becca’s. I wanted to wear my trackies. Anyway how much do we owe Joey?” quickly changing the subject.

“A tenner. He got food as well.” Rochelle replied.

“Tidy. Everyone ready to go over then?”

“NO ROX. We’ve got to do our hair yet.” I know Rochelle wouldn’t be ready.

“Rox you added that song to the album for after?”

“Oh no I’ll do it now Becca. Oh and what were you on about earlier?”

“Tell ya later.” I grabbed Rochelle’s iPod dock and tested it to see if it worked.

An hour later we were ready to go over. I was feeling a sense of De Ja Vu. I hoped this party wasn’t going to end like the last one.
