Chapter XXIII - Glowing

[Midnight Hall, Lancashire, 6:30 pm, F 06/01/17]

PHIL: (to cornelia and martyn who are across the round table) "Have I mentioned how glad I am that you decided to have a sunset wedding rather than a sunrise wedding?"

MARTYN: "Yes. Only a couple hundred times."

PHIL: (shrugging as he glances around the hall, full of round white tables like theirs) "I wouldn't have come if it was in the morning."

CORNELIA: (exchanging a look with martyn) "We know."

PHIL: "Ew."

CORNELIA: "What?"

PHIL: "You're doing that mushy thing that helplessly in love, sappy couples do."

MARTYN: (defensive) "And what's that?"

PHIL: "Oh, 'we'd like to go to the cinema', 'we don't like oranges', 'we couldn't get to sleep'. Pretending they're the same person. It's annoying."

CORNELIA: "You're annoying."

DAN: (affectionately scolding) "Leave them be, Phil, they just got married. If there's a time to be sappy, this is definitely it."

CATH: "Anyway, it's not like you don't do that. You and Dan always speak as one."

PHIL: "That's such a lie."

CATH: (glacing around the table) "Would you like me to ask a second opinion?"

DAN: (warning) "Phil, don't do it."

PHIL: "You're supposed to be on my side."

DAN: "I am on your side. That's why I'm advising you to step out of this round, so you don't lose."

PHIL: "But we don't do the we thing."

DAN: (laughing) "Think about what you just said."

PHIL: "Oh." (with sudden realisation) "But, we're not a mushy couple."

DAN: (grimaces) "Ooh..."

PHIL: "Really? We are?" (continues when Dan nods) "We're not helplessly in love."

DAN: "Speak for yourself."

PHIL: (affectionately slaps dan's arm) "Guess that means we're sappy as well."

CORNELIA: "And you don't even have an excuse."

PHIL: "Shut up."

CATH: "Phil, don't be rude." (gesturing to cornelia and martyn) "And you two, hurry up. The first dance is almost on. Dan, if you're done, I would go now."

DAN: (turning to phil, whispering) "I'm scared."

PHIL: (bright smile) "Don't worry, I messed up my speech and no one cared."

DAN: "Yeah, but it's not a speech."

PHIL: "Which is why it's even better." (when dan continues looking unsure) "I'll come with you."

DAN: "You will?"

PHIL: "Of course." (intertwines their fingers and pulls him towards the stage) "Come on."
