Lydia was terrified as Stiles helped her through the door of the emergency room. It was busy, there were lots of doctors tending to patients.
"Hi. Can I help you two?" A female doctor asked, directing her attention to Lydia's pregnant stomach.
Lydia explained what had happened that morning, and the doctor moved fast, leading her to a wheelchair and rushing to a room with a bed.
"What's your name?" The tall, brunette woman asked.
"Lydia Martin." She replied anxiously.
"Alright. I'll have a doctor come take a look as soon as possible." She smiled. "Just sit tight."
"Thank you!" She and Stiles called out as she exited the room.
Within a few moments, another female doctor, Doctor Brown, was sitting across from the strawberry blonde after taking notes on Lydia's medical history.
"So, first we're going to monitor the baby's heart rate to see if we can tell what's going on." She explained, applying some hand sanitizer before slipping on a pair of blue latex gloves.
The room was filled with tension, and all Lydia could think about was the possibility of hearing no heartbeat on the monitor. She closed her eyes in fear as Doctor Brown wrapped the device around her stomach. Stiles noticed the worry on her face, so without thinking, he grabbed her hand, causing her muscles to relax. They made eye contact for a split second, and she was calm for a moment. All the anxiety, stress, and terror went away. It was just him and her in puffy clouds of hope and dreams.
She only looked away when the sound of a racing heart filled the room.
"Oh my gosh!" She gasped, tears swelling her eyes. "You're okay..."
Stiles leant over hopefully, a goofy grin spread across his face.
"So, it seems as though your baby's heart is as strong as it should be. Now I'll examine your cervix to see if it's opening. Preterm labour could be a possibility." She explained, removing the monitor.
Lydia's relief turned to confusion and panic once again. "Labour? Isn't it too early? I'm not ready at all!"
"Technically speaking, it isn't too early, but there are a lot of risks. We'll do everything to keep that baby in there for as long as possible if that's the case."
Stiles gave her hand a slight squeeze to remind her that he was there.
"It's okay. The baby's okay." He was so grateful he could finally say those words to reassure her. "I'm gonna go call Scott, I'll be right outside if you need me."
She nodded, releasing his sweaty palm from her's. "See you soon."
He exited the room, removing his phone from the pocket of his hoodie. Two texts from Scott sent four minutes ago.
And I'm a dad! Asher James McCall is 7 pounds 4 ounces. Call me whenever you can!
Oh, Allison says hi!
I press his phone number and lift my iPhone to my ear as the call goes through. Within two rings, Scott answers.
"Hey, buddy!" He exclaimed. "I have a son!"
Stiles let out a slight chuckle, placing his hand on the back of his neck. "So I hear. Congratulations. I'm so excited to meet him and teach him to play baseball."
"And lacrosse!" Scott added enthusiastically.
"Or whatever he wants!" Allison chimed in. "Archery would be nice, though."
