Ella

I wished I could stay but we'd agreed that Ruby and I were to help out in the battle raging on outside.

"Are you okay?"

"Yes, go!"

I rushed out with Christian and Logan on my side. Adrian had decided to stay for Ruby and Eric was holding Arielle close. She looked excited but nervous at the same time. Ella guessed it was because she had Eric but now had to face off against the Queen and her daughter.

They rushed out and Ella picked up a sword. She'd never known how to wield one before and was still rusty but Adrian and Logan had coached the girls through practice and she felt confident she could take down people with it. She didn't want to max out on her energy after all.

The first knight charged at her as she side stepped. His speed pushed him a little too far and she slashed at his leg before moving on. Her goal was not to kill but merely stop. She was sorry about any of the resulting pain but also knew it was necessary to stop the Queen and prevent the harm she was inflicting on everyone.

She quickly stabbed one soldier in the shoulder. He kept pawing at her foot and she fell on the ground. He started dragging her towards him but she quickly kicked out her leg and got him in the face. He moaned in pain and she winced. She would never get used to the feeling of hurting someone with purpose. She got up and ran on, finding Christian surrounded by guards. He was bravely battling them all but she could tell he was losing, unsavoury as the thought was. She fought her way towards him, occasionally using her powers to flick soldiers aside. She started fighting the soldier who'd been behind Christian and blocked his strike. She continued to parry, dodge and dart around the soldier, rolling under him and slashing him across the back. He yelled out and fell to the ground as she stared down at him.

"Behind you!" Christian yelled.

She turned to face her attacker and quickly swiped at his leg and bicep. He dropped the sword and limped away, realising that she didn't want to do this. She'd been able to see that he was burning with rage towards his Queen for bringing them to war this way.

They turned to the last knight and Ella decided to test out her mental abilities.

Why are you doing this?

What do you get? The Queen - you're just pawns in her game, nothing else and she is not afraid to sacrifice you. Do you really want to harm the opposing side when they're trying to bring you peace?

The soldier looked down and hung his head. He slunk away, unwilling to face her. She started noticing that the soldier's ranks were not united, there was fighting amongst them all.

Why are you fighting?

She opened her mind to everyone and they turned towards her.

Don't fight, it's not worth it. Being loyal to such a tyrant will get you nowhere. We're fighting for the freedom of this nation, don't you think you should join us?

She didn't need to control their thoughts, all she needed to do was get them to believe in the truth of her words and nothing else.

That's when the ice shard came flying out towards her but she was already using too much of her power to communicate and couldn't deflect the shard.

Her mother jumped out of the crowd and pushed her out of the way.

"Mum!" Ella screamed.

Her mum smiled at her as the blood dribbled from the sides of her mouth.
