Chapter 20 - Why are you doing this to us?
* Joey's POV *
I expected to wake up, safe and sound in the comfort of Shane's arms, and in our hotel room. But my eyes were met with a white wall..the one from my "dream".. I guess it wasn't a dream, after all. All of it was real...and the sensation of waking up was actually falling asleep. The feeling of being so close to safety and then yanked from it in the blink of an eye left me feeling lost and dazed. I felt so tired and out of energy..but I'd just slept.
My eyes swept over my body. I was chained to an old, wooden chair by the ankles and wrists; clad in dark-wash jeans and a plain button-down. I recognized these clothes. They were Sawyer's. Instinct told me to paw at the clothes and get them off, but rationality me that I couldn't. I was chained...and oh so tired. My eyes flicked to Shane. He was asleep, like I had just been. His position looked uncomfortable but He looked peaceful... I hoped he hadn't fallen asleep like I had, suspecting to wake up okay and unharmed. My mouth was parched and tasted funny, my head was hazy, And Trying to comb through the knot of my thoughts was psychically impossible.
I hated this. I felt so out of control, and so angry. There was just so much anger bubbling on the surface of my mind and I couldn't risk letting it explode. It was mind over matter; emotions over death. This whole situation was tearing me apart and I just wanted to go home.
And that's when I broke. I don't have a home. I don't have a family. I don't have friends. Sawyer ruined my life. I don't have a life anymore, I have nothing to live for. I might as well be left here to rot and die. And then my thoughts wandered to Shane. He didn't deserve to be put through this. Sawyer forced him along on our journey. Even if he had a shit home, it had to have been better than this. In another year, he would've been free from his awful dad, no longer put through hell with terrible abuse.
I then decided that I wasn't giving up. I was smarter than Sawyer, regardless of how devious he was. Next time he came to "check" on us, I would somehow outsmart him. I'd get answers out of him, and I'd find a way to get Shane and I free. This wasn't Shane's problem, it was mine, and it was up to me to save him. Because I loved him, and if that's the only thing that kept me going, than so be it. After all, I would die for him. But I wouldn't live for him.
* Shane's POV *
"Poor, poor Joey. I manipulated you. You thought we were in this alone, but darling, I made friends in all the right places. And when you turned your back on me, those friends of mine became enemies of yours. They helped me when my own teammate wouldn't. I've got so many advantages over you. Neither of you will leave here until you don't even remember your own name. I've pondered over torturing you both in unimaginable ways to speed along this process..but I've come to enjoy this torture much more. Left alone with your thoughts for hours.... The drugs I pump into this room allow me to control your sleeping patterns...I'm the one who calls the shots. You are under my control; You are my own personal lab rat." I heard his words, filled with malice and spewed like venom, but I couldn't open my eyes. I knew it was those drugs Sawyer spoke about, but it felt more sinister than that. I felt trapped within the confines of my own body, like I didn't belong. But this was my body, and regardless of Sawyer's words, I had control over myself. Right?
I coughed; the sound guttural and raspy. I heard a soft squeal then a facetious laugh. "Your boyfriend is joining the party! Finally," Anger consumed me then, mainly angled at Sawyer, but also to myself for being
unable to control myself in a time like this. I needed to have complete power over my body and mind, its the only thing I had to use to my advantage. Its the only thing I had period. Which sucked, because I couldn't even open my goddamned eyes!
Maybe I thought Sawyer was preaching to the walls because when I heard Joey spoke, it surprised me. "Why are you doing this to us?" His voice was weak, and I felt my hope fall as fast as it rose. Joey was all I had, and he sounded as weak as I felt. We were never going to get out of here. My life was only just beginning and this would be all I'd ever known.
"Because you deserve it.. both of you. There's no one to blame but yourselves." Sawyer's voice was so joy-filled, it made me question everything. We hadn't done anything to him, but gone along with his commands... but when we fought back, we were the bad guys?! And how was he enjoying this?! What kind of sick, twisted person do you have to be to actually find pride in kidnapping and torture?! He was sick, sick, sick; he needed help. If we ever got out of here, I was turning him in, even if I had to turn myself in, too.
I was pulled out of my thoughts by the sound of metal scraping against asphalt. The sound was loud yet dull, nail-biting yet peaceful. It was the sound of hope; the sound of freedom. It was the sound of Joey finding a way to break out of his restraints. It was the sound of victory. It was the sound of success.
