I saw Lawrence staring at the sky, alone like always, his brows knotted over his eyes. It made me want to save him. I knew how stupid that was, but I still wanted to. I was going to try to get to him even if I failed. Otherwise, I would regret it forever. The only things I ever regretted were things I didn't do, places I hadn't visited, people I hadn't met.
With a deep breath, I walked to him with purpose. I'd ignored him two years ago. I'd given up on him making the first move two years ago. Always wanting to be pursued, but never pursue.
Two years had been long enough.
I took a deep breath and went for it.
"Hi," I said. That's the only thing I knew how to say to him.
His face froze and I braced myself for rejection.
"Hi," he said, his dark blue eyes were intense and his dark brows framed them in an emotion I didn't understand. I'd never been as speechless as in that moment. His voice was beautiful. He was beautiful, but in that moment he was more than that. He was raw, real, and more unattainable than ever.
"Um, I saw you left class yesterday," I said, cognizant of my nerves and my shortcomings. Reaching in my backpack, I pulled the notes I'd neatly copied for him. "I thought you would need these." There. I'd said my purpose. Now he could go back to ignoring me and I would be happy because I'd achieved what I wanted to for so long. To talk to him without feeling bad about it.
Like always, he was silent, and I prepared to leave utterly and hopelessly happy because I'd accomplished my goal.
His hand on mine stopped me, his touch so soft. It was so unexpected, so unpredictable, I was in shock. My breath caught. My blood pumped. My heart pounded. My skin felt electric and so alive. More than ever.
"Thank you," he said and slid his hand from mine. I nodded and walked away, the tingling feeling in my hand the only proof our encounter had been real.
