Chapter Fifteen
She frowned. "You're so stupid." Ariella said, standing up. "I should have known you were-"
"No, I'm not lying. Just, listen to me." Deyes said, grabbing her hand and dragging her to sit back. "My dad's a doctor, a scientist. He's taken care of a hundred patients, and I'm the only true Lesser he had. It was by chance."
"You're not a Lesser, Deyes." said Ariella softly, in shock. Why would Deyes say that?
"Will you let me tell you the story?"
"Fine." She said, knowing it was bull.
"When I was six, I was playing hide and seek. I knew I shouldn't have been in my dads study but that was the best place to hide. Petra never dared to go in there and neither did Dev because my dad would have whipped us to no end. Of course being the idiot I was, I went in there anyways, because he was at work.
"My father came in with Dr. Westerson, though. They were arguing... and I heard everything." Whispered Deyes, the painful memory surfacing. "I found out everything the Fective are hiding."
"Ariella, the Lesser population has been going down and that's to be expected since as time progresses so does our medicine. This is bad for the Fective though, because if there are less Lessers; there's less free work, and less money. They don't like that, and they began to make 'Lessers' on purpose. They actually don't put the right genetic sequence, they put the mutation that makes Lesser's Lesser into the embryos. They usually do this to Lesser's who have children because it's just so much easier to pass off. But my dad had to choose randomly who would have the Lesser, because he didn't meet his quota. He picked your parents, Ariella. They wanted something unique in you, something with your eyes, so he knew it would be easy to show that the genetic sequence had morphed to give you dark hair, to make you a Lesser. He still wanted to try your eyes though, and he did. Instead of giving you a wrong genetic health sequence though, he mixed up a peice of ours by mistake. He gave me the morphed version, the health abnormality, while you were given the dark hair sequence still that was part of mine. He found his mistake too late, he knew they would be able to tell you were a 'Lesser' although it was just a mistake made by him. While, I looked perfect, it's just my physical and mental health that's wrong... I have a birthmark I'm not suppose to have too. That's why he hates me so much, because I am literally, in all senses of the word, his biggest mistake. He didn't want to give me away though, not because he loved me but for his status. If people found out they had a Lesser, their status would go down, his percentage would go down and, Pet's and Dev's engagements would be ripped apart. I was going to be the last one, last kid and if he took me it would break my mother's heart, then destroy his own social latter. So, he switched our blood samples that make sure the children that look normal really are normal.
"He wanted to see you though, because your eyes were successful and that means he came up with a compatible sequence that could make him a lot of money. He requested you here to make sure nothing mutated, changed while you grew up, and you didn't. You are perfect, and I'm not."
Ariella took in a shaking breath, bringing her knees to her chest. "How does the little girl get involved with this?"
He sighed. "I felt horrible, I knew what it meant even at that age. Someone was paying my price. I should have been taken, I should've been the one that should get tattooed, I knew I could've been the one standing behind my mother serving her every whim. I didn't know what to do though. I couldn't tell anyone, I couldn't get you back because that would mean sending myself out there. Which is selfish, really selfish but, I don't feel like a Lesser. Even though I know I am."
"No one feels like a Lesser. None of that is your fault."
"I know, but I was a kid, Ariella. I started to go to the East Side and help people there, just small things. When I turned thirteen, the rebels found me. They call themselves the Allegiance. They help Lessers, usually the ones called to the Reform Centers. We save them, like we saved Lilly."
