- Peridot's POV -
It's extremely dark, except for the lights from the stars and the headlights. I've never seen stars, the Capital is too polluted.
Everyone is sleeping. I have some time to think to myself. I'm obviously not leaving anytime soon. My mind wanders, until I realize: who's driving the van?
"Do you ever sleep, Lazuli?"
"Don't call me that. I'm Lapis."
"Right. Sure."
"I have a job to do. What about you, Corundum? Do you sleep?"
"Every living thing must sleep to create energy."
"Right."
Silence.
"Hey Lazuli, we're not that different, you and I," I start.
"Why's that?"
"I know what it feels like to be a prisoner. Technically speaking, my crown is my own prison." Silence. I walk to her side, and extend a hand. "Lets stop being enemies."
She looks at me, then back on the road. "No."
I'm struggling for words. "You're not bad Lazuli. I screwed up."
"I'm not falling for your bull."
"Ugh." My mouth opens and closes, I'm looking for words. "I really like you, Lazuli. Please shake my hand."
"Go sit down."
"La"--"Go! Don't talk to me!"
I do as she says. It's silent again, only till something warm grips my hand, and puts something inside it. Inside is a tape recorder, and a note. I lift it up, and use the street lights that pass by to read it. "Keep on trying," It says, signed by Steven.
- Lapis' POV -
Corundum really was right. I haven't slept in a while. But I hate her, I refuse to sleep. I keep my eyes focused on the road, but then my vision gets cloudy. I'm starting to fall asleep. I feel my muscles loosen. My whole body goes numb.
The next thing I know, I hear a loud honk. A car swerves. I struggle to keep my eyes open, but I fail. The next thing I know, I'm in an ambulance.
I sit up. I notice my lip is bleeding, and I have a tight bandage around my head. The door is open, and I step out. Amethyst and Peridot are already gone, but Steven is being questioned. I act fast, forming a bubble around every quartz soldier's head that I see.
"We have to get to safety. There's a kindergarten east of here," Pearl calls, gasping between every word while stepping out of the ambulance.
"Okay. Let's go."
